Eily’s Report – 12th August

Dia is mhuire díobh go léir a Cáirde and welcome to my Report.

A minute’s silence was observed at the lotto draw on Sunday night in honour of founder member, Jerry Lehane. Jerry was taken from us very fast and the shock has left us in a daze and feeling of numbness, a feeling of emptiness. He was quiet spoken, and didn’t go for glory, but he touched every part of our community. Jerry was omnipresent, you’d always see him, and you thought you’d  be seeing him for the rest of your life. He was a member or supporter of everything that was of Millstreet. Not least among them the historic  monument in our Town Square. He guarded it feverishly. Decorated it for historic occasions and woe betide anybody who dared interfere with it.  He was so proud of Ballydaly.  His Chapel on the hill. He always made sure that it looked newly painted and smart. Jerry was a friend to many and I know one or two who will be broken hearted without his daily newsy chat. No words on mine could do justice to what Jerry Lehane meant to our community, as I said we thought we would be seeing him for ever.  It won’t be easy to continue normal life without him but we have to and that is what Jerry Lehane would want us to do.  We offer our sincere sympathy to  his lovely wife Marie and her family and pray that God will help them to cope with the terrible loss of their beloved Jerry.  May the Good Lord grant him Eternal Rest and give him the best seat in Heaven.

The beautiful weather continues and even though there are warnings about the scarcity of water, we still can’t help enjoying it.  The fruits of the earth are ripening fast and jam making the order of the day. Apple trees are bending down with the weight of their crop and it’s not easy to save them all. When our children were young having no orchard of our own we stocked up every year with a couple of bags which we bought from and grower, as far away as Killavullen. The deal was that you pick your own and pay on the way out. It was great to head off after our dinner on a fine day be let loose on what we regarded as a garden of Eden and fill up. Needless to say we picked only the best. The next few days were busy. With no other way of preserving them for the winter ahead it was common practice to freeze them. But first they should be peeled and cored cut up and placed into plastic bags in convenient quantities. Then put  a shake of sugar into the bag to coat them lightly before putting them in the freezer. It worked great for all the years that we had family living at home. Ingredients at the ready for apple tarts and pies at any time of year. Blackberries are another wonderful free gift from Mother Nature. This year the crop is as good or even better than ever. Jam making is the order of the day. Or a lovely refreshing dessert can be made by crushing them in a bowl with a sprinkle of sugar. Have them in the fridge and help yourself any time.

My lovely lemon tree wasn’t looking well at all. It didn’t flower or fruit this year and I worried that I could lose it. So I asked Mr. Google.  I described the symptoms and right away I was told, my potted plant was suffering from magnesium deficiency. Banana skins etc were mentioned but the main one was a helping of Epsom Salts. I haven’t crossed paths with Epsom Salts for many a long day. (Thanks be to God) Will we ever forget the weekly dose  when we were young.  Every Saturday morning, we’d be lined up ,and our house keeper Pete would  dole out our dose  and stand over us to make sure we swallowed it ,and swallowed it all. We were told the it was necessary for our health. I almost pitied my beloved Lemon tree but never the less I did what Mr. Google advised me to do. I was away for a couple of days over the weekend and on my return I was truly gobsmacked to see a blossom out and some leaves showing signs of recovery, already  on my little lemon tree. Mr Google said that many citrus plants are affected like mine and the helping of Epsom Salts is the answer.
