Eily’s Report – 22nd July

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my report.

Well it promises to be a very exciting week here in our town. The International  Horse Show kicks off tomorrow Wednesday July 23 and from then on it will be horses,  horses all the way until August 3rd.   Bringing entries from seven countries to our town. New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden,  the U.S.A. France, Portugal, Great Britain, plus lreland, promising to bring large crowds to view the cream of the worlds bloodstock battling it out for the honours  at the historic grounds of the Green Glens and Drishane.  Right on its wake the International Horse Show will be followed by the exciting Mounted Games Championships which will run for the week July 28rd to Aug. 3. With entries from as many as ten foreign countries attending.  Their visit will be highlighted by their parade through the town.  Organised by our Community Council, who are pulling out all the stops to make it a very happy and memorable occasion for all. The Pipe band will be out and the Town will bear the flags of all the visiting countries.  Some windows dressed to represent them. The prizegiving will be done at the Town Square. Each team of ponies will carry the flag of the home country  aloft and they will be described by the commentator  of the day as they as they prance along. Those who are lucky enough to win in their class will be called to accept their prizes.   Volunteers and a Garda presence will ensure the safety and the enjoyment of all.  The previous time when they were here, the  organisers were overjoyed by the reception which they received from the Community of Millstreet. Remarking that in all the places where they hold their events around the globe that Millstreet was the only town to give them such a warm welcome. And to show their gratitude they donated money to some local charities.

Please note that if anybody has Accommodation/B&B to let, they can put their name on the Green Glens website page. My B&B is no longer operating though I get calls now and then. So there is demand limited maybe, but perhaps it could grow if names were put forward.

All roads will lead to the renowned pub in Carriganima this weekend for the Declan Nerney Show on Saturday night. This time dancers will be treated to a wonderful covered venue where they can dance the night away regardless of the weather.  Seanie and his motley crew have been very busy preparing for his grand opening at the weekend. Polished wood panelling and built in seating has added to the comfort and the see thru roof and walls makes the whole atmosphere seems bright and cheerful. This mecca of entertainment, carved out of the side of the hill, has made a name for itself in recent years, and now the stars like Declan Nerney are begging to be invited  back. Well done to all at the Pub in the popular Village of Carriganima, another one up rural Ireland.

Our Tidy Towns Association want you to know that judging will go on until the end of August. You still have time to brush up and trim up and even plant more up.  The recent rains had their uses but a little overdone in a few places. Different plants respond in different ways to the rain. Roses seem to love even the hottest sun, but they can sag with the heavy rain. Grass has made a comeback with the soft rain. But as too much of anything is good for nothing, alas our grain growers are lamenting the fact that the heavy rains have lodged their precious barley. But the efforts of the Tidy Towns goes on and there are some fine prizes to be won for the best. And lots of runners up. Best Front Garden plus 5 runners up. Best Town House, plus five runners up. Best business frontage, window boxes, gardens, the list goes on and it is all in the name of making Millstreet a more beautiful and interesting place. A home town that we can all be proud of.

This week we mourn the passing of the lovely Geraldine O’Mahony Justice. Another lovely person gone from our Main Street.  In her young days she took a big part in the running of our town. Was never found wanting when an extra was needed on stage for any of our concerts and plays.  Or the running of our Agricultural Show which was such a big part of us back then and so on. Herself and Donie often made us proud of their successes at the greyhound track. Geraldine was there for us ever ready to fill a space which needed filling. And now we wish her Eternal Rest as we send our sincere condolence to her beloved Donie who took such wonderful care of his Geraldine to the very end. Well done, Donie.

The changing of the priests of the Diocese took place during the week and the following was on our Mass leaflet on Sunday. ‘We extend a warm welcome to Fr.
