Eily’s Report – 24th June

Dia is mhuire diobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my report.

Put another nickel in. In the Nickelodeon, all I want is loving you and and Music, Music, Music. It was a case of music, music all the way at our wonderful Busking Fest on Saturday March 21, the longest day of the year. It was a  brave adventure for our Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Association to hold the first of its kind in the town. But once the idea was born, the whole community rowed in behind them.  Duggan’s Business yard was available for parking.  In the run-up to the day the shops and business places in the town decorated their windows and it helped in no small way to create an atmosphere of expectancy long before the big day came. When the day came those taking part registered at the GAA Hall and were given the place where they performed for a given time before moving on to another. There were places allocated  along the full length of the town and Mary Hickie’s yard provided a centrepiece for the event.  Committee members kept an eagle eye on the entire event to see that everything was seen to. The crowds came, whole families, parents, children of all ages and people of all ages. There were places for resting and plenty of people to meet and talk to, as the musicians spread their magic far and wide.  Our food providers did us proud.  Hot food outlets plus a variety of refreshment places. Smoothies and so on.  IRD Duhallow provided a covered seated area where people were able to sit and have their food. The tent in the Square also made a welcome gathering/ resting place.

There was no end of excitement when Tommy & Breda Sheehan opened the doors of the historic Mary Cronin’s Paper Shop (which they now own) where refreshments for the working volunteers were provided, but many more could not resist the urge to go in and see once again the humble place where they bought a nib for a  pen or a penny jotter on their way to school all those years ago. They saw again the little scales hanging from the ceiling where Connie Cronin weighed  a half ounce of snuff, or maybe pepper and best of all it is now in the careful hands of the new owners Tommy and Breda.

But back to the Busking. There were prizes for the various classes and prize for the best window. Prizegiving was held at five o’clock and long after the last one was given out the sound of music still floated out of the pubs  in the town till closing time. Well done to all involved in our wonderful Bucking Fest. The first of many no doubt.

The following is the list of winners. Best windows Capabu, Aroma Cafe, Mulachy’s Pharmacy & Garden of Eve.   In Music  1st, U12 Ashling O’Sullivan. 2nd. The Real Deal. U15. 1st.Noah Tarrant. The shop windows went through a very brisk u-turn when the fiddles and banjos etc had to be taken down in haste  to make room for the Sacred Heart Statues. Sunday  was the feast of Corpus Christie and windows along the way were decorated with Holy Statues and Flowers in honour of the holy day that was in it.  Following the 11.30 mass the annual Corpus Christie Parade was held. Light rain put a doubt on the occasion but yet it went ahead without any great problem.  Little girls in their floaty Holy Communion dresses and veils walked ahead of the Host which was carried by Canon John under the canopy which was held aloft by four men. Local helpers erected the Alter in good time for the arrival of the Host. There was a fine attendance, the Pipe Band played and Jerry Doody led the Rosary from his car.  The church choir sang the hymns. Following the Benediction the parade returned to the Church for the final blessing.

Still more celebrations followed. The wonderful Aubane Social Society celebrated their 50th anniversary of their social  Centre in  true Aubane style on Sunday. In that half a century the local people have succeeded in preserving all that is good in that area. It’s people, it’s history, it’s customs.  So many priceless things the like of which has been lost in so many other parts of rural Ireland. In spite of many challenges they held on to their school house when it was closed down and instead of letting it go to ruin and decay, they used it as a platform from which to build a new future for Aubane and its past safely recorded. They had music and dancing the best of food and they planted a tree to commemorate the historic occasion. We wish the Aubane Social Society God’s Blessing and every success well into the future.

Tonight the annual Mass will be said at St.John’s Well.  The Community Singers will be there and we hope the weather will be kind and that the midges will stay way.

The Mass will be followed by the re- opening of the Mushera  Dancing Platform on the Slopes of Mushera Mountain. Music by the popular Singing Jarvey – Ger Healy. A great time is guaranteed. Admission is free  and weather permitting , dances will be held there regularly during the coming months.
