Eily’s Report – 27th May

Dia is mhuire diobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my report.

If we’re not on our knees, well we should be, to thank the Good Lord for the lovely rain and we still need more. The beautiful warm sunshine of the past number of weeks was a joy. Crops grew like never before, silage was harvested. Fruit trees and flowering shrubs weighed down with blossoms while we lived it up in summer style.  Greeted by the sun every morning, wearing summer attire which hadn’t left the wardrobe for years. The long spell gave us the perfect opportunity to shake off the blues and build a store of goodness which can only be got from the sun which will, le conamh Dé. sustain us for the months ahead. But sadly the signs were beginning to show. Places were turning brown and water going low. Which can be a concern judging by what we see in other countries. But the tide turned and the rain came .It fell slow and soft ,gave itself time to be absorbed by the earth, and refresh everything again. An answer to prayer if ever there was one.

The light rain which fell at the start put an end to all the floating bits which had hovered in the air, almost clouding our view. Debris of the dandelion and the willow and so on.  In the dry conditions they clung on to cobwebs and limbs and everything but the light rain grounded  them all and the effect was clearly visible.

Some people heard the Cuckoo, The Cock Pheasant makes himself well heard in the local field after sunset and the rabbits and foxes and roaming cats make the countryside into a mini jungle. One fox has no tail which makes him look very lacking because the fox tail or brush is his crowning glory.

The long dry spell made the year seem long somehow and the planting season is only starting now. The end of May was always deemed the safe time to plant out tender plants bedding plants. So really we are only at the start of the flowering year, which gives us a great deal to look forward to.

Last week I parted with some old palm trees in my garden. One we transplanted from KIlmeedy when we retired in 1988. Because it was a gift that I got from Geraldine for a Mother’s Day back then. It was a nice tall cone shape and doubled as my Christmas Tree for many years, but time had taken its toll and along with two smaller ones it turned out to be an eyesore at my front wall. John D made short work of them with the wonderful machinery that is there today. But they didn’t go without a few misgivings on my part.  We’ve been through a lot in all those years, some wonderful times, some sad  and that tree stood by me through it all.  But now that it’s gone it paves the way for me to plan and plant again  and at the end of the day isn’t that what life is all about.

A wonderful talk was given at our Library on last Friday about dementia and alzheimer’s disease. Things that nobody wants to talk about. It was given by a lady called Amy Murphy. She was excellent in her ability to convey her message. Twelve women and two men attended and I was sorry that many more were not there. Sadly every day now we meet people who are affected by this relatively new ailment and not only did her lecture include many ways by which we can all try to avoid things that could lead to our being affected, but also how we can relate to those who are in the early stages or perhaps fully affected.  Like most things our diet can be a factor and  advances are being made in the research into the problem. I think it is important that people should take all the information and education that is available to them to try a curb this ailment.

Still with health, many years ago I was in the throes painful arthritis and the doctor put me on a course of tablets which didn’t suit me, but I was fortunate to meet a person who was cured in a non medical manner which she got from a book which was written by a lady who cured herself by her own methods. I got the book at the time and went by the parts that were relevant to myself, mostly based on diet and in a matter of a few months I was back to my old self and TG remain so till this day. Over the years I bought many copies of the book and gave them to others but never got them back  and now thanks to our wonderful Librarian, Gillian  she located the book and it is now in the library and can be hired out by anybody who wants it.  It’s called ‘Curing Arthritis the Drug Free Way’ by Margaret Hills.   Everything doesn’t work the same for everybody but it worked for me and I hope it works for you.
