My name is Joshua O’Sullivan, and for the past five years, I have been growing my hair for children in need, a journey that began during the unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic. I am hoping to cut and donate over 13 inches of hair to The Little Princess Trust on the 2nd November 2024.
When the world went into lockdown, everything changed. In the face of so much uncertainty and hardship, I felt compelled to do something meaningful, something that could help others during such a difficult time. I began reflecting on the struggles faced by children who, due to illness or medical conditions, lose their hair and don’t fully understand why they look different from their peers. The thought of a child looking in the mirror, confused as to why they can’t have hair like their friends, touched me deeply. This became my motivation to help.
My journey started back in Transition Year of secondary school. It began with a simple buzz haircut, a haircut I have worn for many years, but it is something I never could have predicted would turn into such a significant endeavor. As the months turned into years, I remained committed to this cause, determined to make a tangible difference in the lives of children who might benefit from my hair donation. Over the years, my hair has grown to over 13 inches in length, now kept in a low ponytail, a symbol of my dedication to this mission.
As a secondary school teacher and Special Needs Assistant, my goal has been further fueled by my close connection with young people. Every day, I witness the unique challenges children face, especially those who feel different from their peers. Working with students who have special needs has deepened my empathy and understanding of the struggles they experience, often in ways that are hard to express. My role as an educator drives me to not only teach but also to show compassion and support for those who need it most. This experience has only strengthened my resolve to make a positive impact through my hair donation, offering children the confidence and joy they deserve.
I hope this fundraiser will help children in need, and I thank you for assisting me in any way, be it by helping me in my journey with hairstyles, helping me fundraise or even by spreading awareness.
