Eily’s Report – 18th October

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to my weekly Report.

The scene outside is a picture of tranquility with nothing to show for the record breaking wind and rain of the weekend. The sun is shining brightly on the lush green fields both near and afar as our parish rejoices in not just one but two successes in the playing field at the weekend.  The extreme elements failed to dampen the spirit of our gallant teams who brought an unbelievable double win to our town on Saturday evening.  Our U17 hurlers brought home the bacon while our lovely junior Camogie girls sanctioned a place for themselves in the final in the near future. Flags and bunting flew from every vantage point to support them on their way and they didn’t disappoint. The Pipe Band and supporters were there to celebrate with them all the way. Following a welcome meal at the Wallis Arms Hotel, they were paraded through the town and the  wind and rain did nothing to stop them. Our brilliant pipe Band members wore rainproof gear and played on. Two wins in one evening was indeed something to celebrate. Flags were sold out in many places, but people hung out whatever they had, just to show their  support for these young teams and their trainers and all those associated with them. They did us proud indeed and all that support will be there for the girls in the final as we wish them the best of luck when their day comes.

Well done to the people of Carriganima who held an-open air vigil for the people of Creeslough outside their Chapel on Friday evening last. Still with the  popular village up to eighty tractors took part in the Millstreet Vintage Club run in aid of their local transport CART. Further to that they presented the proceeds of a previous event which amounted to  €3,320.00 to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland at a pleasant function at the Bridge bar recently.

Our active Retired Society Club enjoyed a very well organised trip to Siamsa Tire last week. The fifty seater bus had very few vacant seats and  included seven men.  The organisers are very pleased to see more men coming along to their functions, and want them to know that they are welcome ,whether alone or with a partner.   They had a wonderful meal at ORiada’s diner outside Castleisland before proceeding on the venue in Tralee. Every care is taken to ensure the least amount of concern for those in the club. Trips are planned and paid for well in advance, tickets for shows etc. are held by the secretary until they arrive at their destination to ensure that none are lost or forgotten. The fee covers everything including tips etc, so that those travelling can be relaxed and carefree throughout. So lift your hat and let the committee know that we value their work in keeping our twilight days happy and content.

The opportunity is still open if you’d like to send in pictures for the new 2023 calendar. The theme is ‘All Kinds of Everything’. Closing date is October 21st. Pictures must be of good quality and send them  to        <email>

The wild wind and rain over the weekend showed no pity for the leaves and flowers and the last roses of Summer are almost giving up the ghost with the promise of more rough days to come. The beautiful red Virginian creeper which was our hurrah  looks so ragged and is a pitiable sight. But there is still plenty of colour to enjoy. The holly bushes are awash with berries also the mountain ash and white thorn with its own profusion of bright red haws. The grass still needs its regular trim and the birds are still living the life on them. No need to hang out the peanuts for another while. It’s time to trim the hedges and  tidy up the garden  as we prepare for long nights when the clocks go back at the end of the month. Then that we change gear and settle down to our indoor hobbies and classes and so on. We really are spoiled for choice with all of the social things that we have to choose from. Knitting, singing, dancing, yoga, creative writing, coffee mornings, 45drives, bridge lessons for those who would like to learn. The Library with lots of new things to choose from. Holy Hour in the church every Tuesday. Legion of Mary Meeting that night. At 7.30  Walks in the park, driving out to admire autumn colours. Think back on how we’d have loved that freedom when we were locked down by Covid, how glad we’d be to do some of these things then. I have almost finished my first jigsaw of the season, 500 pieces this time. I found the 1000 pieces too taxing and not so enjoyable. We all have our likes and dislikes and I must say that the jigsaw is one of the things that does it for me, spread out on the board all the time, and when I’m passing it grips me to try and get another piece and joy when I do before returning to whatever I was doing before. Maybe my coffee is gone cold or a pot ready to boiling over  but it’s worth it.  After two long years of Covid  most people of all ages are looking for company for conversation, trying to find a way back to the way we were, nobody can do it for us we must do it for ourselves and think of others who may need that little push to make them feel that they are welcome and belong.
