Eily’s Report – 11th October

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to my weekly Report.

Our Church choir got no less than two rounds of applause at the 11.30 Mass on Sunday. It was lively and melodious and the sort you’d like to sing along with. Young people took part, and a solo pipe music  by one at the after the Consecration brought a loud  applause from the congregation, further to that in closing the choir gave a rousing hymn to the air of the Goilla Mar and the people showed their appreciation with yet another full bodied round of clapping making it clear their feelings for this sort of upbeat atmosphere at their Sunday Mass. Well done to all concerned.

There’s more good news, the baskets will be back in the church before the end of the month. Perhaps it’s another sign that the virus, if not finished, is at least under control. T.G.

The AGM of our Community Council was held at the Adult Learning Centre on Tuesday night. Their first in two years and again it was a very uplifting event. It was very well attended including Sargant Paul Lynch and a representative of Cork County Council plus some new faces, young people, with new ideas all intent on making Millstreet a better place. Excellent Secretary Maura Kiely read the minutes of the last AGM all two years ago, and chairman Noel Buckley flicked over the pages of his ledger to give the meeting a quick reminder of some of the great work that the Community Council has achieved over the years since it’s inception in 1977. Anne Collins gave an account of grants etc  which are earmarked to complete some projects in hand and for developing new ones.  Representative of Cork County Council, Marie O’Leary informed the meeting of their work in the area and went on the say that the roadway at our town corner, T-Junction and it’s environs is to be refurbished and up-graded in the near future. The financial report by treasurer Margaret Bourke and accountant William O’Flynn showed the Council in a healthy financial situation. A lot done and a lot more to do by a winning team which I hope will remain in place to see us through the uncertain times  ahead in the wake of Corona Virus. Denis Twomey reporting for the Town Park read a note of thanks to the Community Council for allotting  to them one of their Lotto payments to complete a project in the Park which enabled them to complete their work without having to take out a loan, thus highlighting the great co-operation which exists between the various bodies in the parish.

The election of officers was deferred to the next meeting.

The sub-committee in charge of the parish Calendar 2023 want to thank all those who responded to their request for ideas for a theme.  They were very pleased with the response and they have chosen ‘All Kinds of Everything’ as their theme. Now they want people to send in good quality photos which would be synonymous with that theme. So the choice can be pretty wide-ranging. Please email your pictures.  <email> as soon as possible. They are hoping to have the finished copy on sale from November.

All proceeds will go to the  Millstreet Website.

Don’t forget to tune in to Sean Radley tonight from 9.30 on Cork Music Station. For the Past two weeks Sean has filled his time with recordings he made at a very rural country house in Kerry recently.  They were a real blast from the past, old songs and stories, told in the rural accent to gales of laughter to those present. I know that people of my calibre would love it. Sean says that there is an effort being made to open up some of these country houses again in light of the fact that rural people can no longer go to their local pub. Very desirable for the Winter nights ahead and the clocks going back on October 30th.

The members of our Active retired group are travelling to Tralee on tomorrow Wed.  where they will enjoy a meal at O’Riada’s restaurant before travelling on to Siamsa Tire for a Variety Show. The Community singers weekly classes are going very well at the Adult Learning Centre on Thursday nights from 7.30 to 9. Now that more and more people are starting to emerge from the ties of Covid and comparing notes, many  find that their voices are severely curtailed . and by talking to others, it’s beginning to dawn on them that they all feel the same and blame it on covid. I found that I was better able to speak following an hour of singing with Marie’s class and who knows it may be the answer to our problems. So I’m looking forward to the next one this Thursday night.

It’s a sad time in our country. Before last Friday we knew very little about the town of Creeslough in Co. Donegal. (The name came into a song of a lonely man who was on the immigrant ship but longing ‘To be cutting the corn in Creeslaugh today’) Sadly  now we know all about it, and we know ten of its people in  detail, their ages ,what they did ,how they looked,  because they all succumbed to the terrible blast which hit  their local Supermarket on a busy Friday afternoon.. The fact that the explosion was caused by an accident , and not intentional, softened the blow a little but it will not bring these people back. Tragedy of this magnitude shocks everybody.  The Pope, the King of England and top political leaders showed their grief by sending heartfelt messages to those affected. Living in a rural town  ourselves, we can’t even imagine what it must be like to have something like it happen in our midst.  We go about our everyday lives, meet people at Mass ,or in the Park or in the shops ,stop for a chat or just say a passing hello, taking it for granted  that you’ll see them again soon  and then ten of them are taken from us and eight more in hospital.  It  only goes to show how fragile life is and how fragile even the life of a rural community is. If we are to learn anything from the disaster in Creeslough today it is to treasure life and community and the world around us. We send our sincere sympathy to the people of Creeslough  on the death of ten of their people and pray from a full recovery for those who were injured.
