There is particular emphasis on Beamish and Crawford, a brewery that John Greene discovers was a plucky underdog, rather than a serious contender.

Beamish and Crawford are forced to deal with the problems associated with two World Wars, a War of Independence and a Civil War.
Beamish and Crawford close their West Cork Bottling Plant in Bandon in 1967 with the loss of many jobs. We will meet some of the former workforce.
