Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 17th Oct.
In October of 1966, NFA President Rickard Deasy staked his reputation and the reputation of his association on the pivotal farmers protest march from Bantry to Dublin.
Low incomes, an unfair taxation system, rates and the refusal of Government to either meet with or recognise their association, led to the association President leading sixteen West Cork farmers out of Bantry on a 217 mile walk to the gates of Dáil Éireann.
In the concluding programme on Where the road takes me, John Greene meets three of the surviving sixteen.
We also look at the commodity strike of January 1967, which resulted in the jailing of 19 farmers and the confiscation of their machinery.
From Bantry to Dublin – The farmer’s protest march of 1966 – Programme Two – this Sunday evening at 7 on C103.
