Our busy weekend went according to plan. The careful planning for our Culture Day paid off in every way, with people of all ages taking part and doing their bit. Little children were delighted to support the painting competition with many winning prizes. They also took part in the free Traditional Concert which was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel. At 6.30 the Pipe band gave a wonderful recital at the Town Square where the Millstreet Vintage Club were lined up in colourful array. All the pubs put on various entertainment and our members of our Garda force paid a visit to Drishane where they gave a very friendly and informative talk to the many different nationalities who live there. Members of the Community Council also attended. The weather was fine which made it pleasant for the crowds to venture from one venue to another. So well done to our Community Council and all helped in any way to make our Culture Day a day to be proud of.
In turn I was asked by the Community Council to say a sincere word of thanks to everyone who participated and helped in any way to make our Culture night the great success that it was. Special thanks to Billy and staff of the Wallis Arms Hotel who accommodated the free concert and to Fidelis and Bernie Duggan for making their premises available for the Art Exhibition. All very much appreciated.
Next day Saturday September 21st was another very busy day when a a memorable parade was held to laud the Cork Minor Footballers and Cork u20 Footballers who won the All Ireland titles during the Summer. Darragh Cashman, Millstreet and Luke Murphy, Cullen were both members of the Cork Minor Team who won the Tom Markham Cup. And Shane Hickey Millstreet was part of the Cork U20 team who won The Clarke Cup. The weather was not so kind but in spite of the pouring rain the open lorry drove the stars from the Square to the GAA Hall, led by the ever ready pipe band with members dressed in special weather capes to cover both themselves and the instruments. A guard of honour including little children awaited them on their arrival and once indoors the weather was forgotten and a wonderful evening of speeches and prizegiving ensued. But not for very long as the heroes had to leave for Cullen where a similar reception awaited the All Ireland Stars. A wonderful ending to a great weekend. On Monday the Football Stars visited the schools.They talked to the children, signed autographs for them and as an extra bonus they were let off homework for the night.With Millstreet and Cullen represented at National level and Aubane winning a three in a row in the own section, it was an occasion well worth celebrating. Congratulations all round.
Needless to say that Sean Radley and Geraldine Dennehy were on hand to capture it all for posterity.
The Millstreet Pipe band asked me to thank all those who supported their recent church gate collection. And to say they are inviting new members to join the band. On Culture night the Millstreet Vintage Club presented a cheque to the pipe band.
Millstreet Gramophone Meeting takes place at the Canon O Donovan Centre on this Friday at 8.15 and all are welcome Presenter this month is the popular, Maurice Linehan.
The Faith and Light Group, who organise social events for people with special needs are coming to Tubrid Well this Saturday afternoon. Weather permitting they will have Mass at the well side, said by their own priest. Thanks to the large number of seats at the site, the task of taking chairs from the GAA Hall,as was done previously,can be avoided. On a fine day their singing and music fills the air and is a joy to behold. If the weather is not good they hold their program at our GAA Hall.facilities for their refreshments and further singing and dancing. We hope it all goes well for the organisers who go to so much trouble to help those who cannot help themselves.
A very large crowd attended the Blessing ceremony of the newly refurbished Kilcorney Catholic Church which took place on Wednesday evening. Many priests who served in the parish in former years came for the happy occasion including His Lordship Bishop William Crean of Cloyne . The mass and Blessing was followed by refreshments at their Community Centre and celebrations went on until late.
Here are the results of this weeks lotto draw which was held at McCarthy’s Bar on Sunday Night. Numbers drawn were 4,5,17,27 and the Jackpot was not won. €100 went to Mary McSweeney, Carriginma, the seller was Joan Sheehan and she got €50 sellers prize. €50 went to The Twomey Family Station Rd. €20 each to Mike O’Mahony, Coomlogane, Marie Creedon, PJ. Our Active Retired group have some fixed events for every week.
(1) Dancing with Breda on Monday nights at the Canon O Donovan Centre. Aqua Aerobics every Tuesday from Sept 11. With Lynda at the Gleneagle Hotel at 10.30.
(2)On Thursday at 11.am the group meet at the Wallis Arms Hotel for coffee, scones and a chat.
(3)Yoga from Your Chair on Fridays with Nora Keane at the Canon O Donovan Centre,
(4)But please note that on the last Friday of each month (which is this Friday) they have Bingo, with tea and scones from 1.30 to 3. So please do no be alone, new members welcome all thee time. The same goes for the Men’s Shed. They meet on Tuesday nights at 8 at their venue in the Macroom Road. Contact Bertie Buckley.
The air will reek of burning rubber this weekend when the Cork.
Rally which will start on Saturday in Kilnamatyra and Lough Allua will pass by Mullaghanish Mushera on Sunday and the Butter Road. Service will be at the the IDA Industrial Estata in Macroom. So be on the look out for road closures.
