Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my report. There was something for everyone in Millstreet again this past weekend. The weather was very kind for all our outdoor events, which makes all the difference. The Party in the Park on Saturday was varied to suit young and not so young. The Teddy Bear’s picnic, the games, the bouncy castle and the BBQ being the main attractions. Well done to all concerned with this enjoyable venture which is bound to be repeated by the Community Council in years to come.
The Vintage Club’s “Sponsored Truck Run” on Sunday was an event for the big boys. And all in aid of the mighty Air Ambulance Service which will not be cheap to run but will be available to serve the country from its base at nearby Rathcoole. For those wishing to become regular supporters there is a way, it can be done through the Bank or Building Society.
At Sundays fully –marshaled event 140 monster Trucks took part, starting out from the K&L Depot in MountLeader in brilliant sunshine at 12 noon, led by a Garda Escort which led them into the town of Millstreet, just as people came out from 11.30 Mass, there was loud applause and cheering as the mighty parade set off on the tour of parts of beautiful Rathmore, Knocknagree, Ballydesmond, Kanturk, cross country to the Sandpit House and home through Rathcoole , where a monster BBQ and music awaited them. In time we will be told how much this giant parade raised for the Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) fund. Well done once again to our Millstreet Vintage Club and all their supporters.
Many Congratulations to the popular Mary Lane, Adrivale who reached the big Eight-0 recently. Which she celebrated with three generations of her talented family. In the glory days of LTV2 we recorded and hour long program at the Lane Home which was enjoyed by our viewers at the time, and it is still safe in our archives.
Congrats are also in order for Pat McSweeney, formerly of Kilmeedy Bridge who journeyed home from New York to celebrate his 60th birthday with his family and many friends. They left no stone unturned to give the popular Pat a 60th to treasure, before returning the USA.
The Passing of our dear friend, Anne Keane, brought friends and acquaintances from the traditional music scene into Millstreet in their thousands from all parts of the Country last week to pay their final respects to a wonderful lady who touched the lives and hearts of so many in her kind and special way. I could fill volumes in praise of Anne. But those who knew her know that they have a wonderful friend in Heaven. RIP. A deep void has been left in us by her passing and may the Good Lord fill that void with his Holy Grace.Our deepest sympathy goes to her loving brothers and sisters.
The Month of August is upon us and already there is a marked shortening of the evenings. So we must make the most of our daylight hours. Many of our gardening efforts are coming to fruition now and we can reap the fruits of our labour. Mine are few by any standard but still its very rewarding to go out into the garden and eat some lovely fresh peas off the plant or pick an onion for direct use in the pot. Cuttings stuck down some months ago in gay abandon showing signs of taking root. And the little birds laboriously nurtured by their hardworking parents up to now, taking to flight and like any young thing they swing in the air at neck break speed without a care in the world. Oh the joy of having the time to watch them. In my leisure I’ve noticed that not only parents can spoil the youngsters. I like to throw waste food out to the crows and watch them devour it. They may all look the same size to me. That is until they start to feed the the young ones won’t even pick it up, they open the beak and beg just as they did in the nest. I saw one mother crow trying to train hers by breaking up the food and dropping it in front of her offspring but to no avail. She still had to pick it up and put it into its beak. Spoiled Brat I found myself saying.
I was glad to hear on the Radio this week that there is an effort being made now to recall the life of the little Child known as Little Nellie of Holy God. Little Nellie who died at the age of five in 1908, was still talked about when I came along in the Thirties. And there was great devotion to her,especially in cases of sick children . The Irish Society on Christian Civilisation would like to let her story be known and they brought out a little book giving an account of this special child. Now there are efforts to have her raised to sainthood , and with so many illnesses affecting children and young people nowadays, Little Nellie may be the one to offer some comfort to a worried parent.
