Two wonderfully talented Groups from Millstreet Community School will be sharing their superbly creative designs in Limerick at the Regional Final of the Annual Bank of Ireland sponsored Junk Kouture 2019. One of the Groups was recently presented with a prestigious Silver Ticket to the Regional Final by Sportsperson Supreme, Briege Corkery (winner of 18 All Irelands!). Here we share images from Briege’s recent visit to the School. A special recording of the occasion will be broadcast on Cork Music Station on this Tuesday, 12th Feb. 2019 at 10pm. Art Teacher,Sandra Moynihan shares the following in relation to the First Design which was accorded the Silver Ticket:
This striking ensemble created by three Cork students has been chosen to progress to the regional final of Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture 2019. Millstreet Community School, Transition Year students, Alison McCarthy , Julia Radziszewska, Emma Moynihan (Model) are celebrating the success of their ‘Pop Art’-inspired costume called ‘Popluxxy’. The three students were surprised with a precious Silver Ticket, with just one awarded in Cork from the Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture representatives.
The creative students used recyclable materials to create their design:
- Old high heels, Old bandeau top
- Old dandy comics
- Old curtain and scrap materials from a seamstress
- A zip from of an old dress
- An old discontinued wallpaper book
- An old hairband
- Dry markers from the art room Cardboard and wire from the art room
Now in its ninth year, Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture has become the country’s leading fashion and art competition for secondary school students challenged with creating unique, original and innovative outfits from recycled materials and junk. The Southern Regional Final takes place on March 8th in the University of Limerick. Popluxxy’s design will then go into a public vote online which will be worth 10% of their overall marks received in the regional finals. This will take place from the 18th-22nd February, details on voting will be displayed on Facebook, Twitter and posters around Millstreet and the surrounding areas.

Description
Our design is inspired by feminism as we feel it’s an issue relevant in 2018 and empowering women should be something we all do. We took inspiration from strong female figures like Countess Markievicz. We named our piece “Imperishable” because the character wearing it is strong and it also links in with the items used because most of them would be around for a long time if we didn’t reuse them.
Materials
Leather from sofa, teddys from when we were young, cans gathered from parties, chicken wire from farm, old newspaper , bin bags from garage and art room , old princess dress, old school shoes, broken mop , bike chains from recycling centre, bottle caps from local pub, wires from broken chargers, stick from fallen tree in storm, old welding mask from metalwork room, bulb from broken lamp, worn belt
Summary
We made our hoop skirt and attached plastic bags to a belt. We added the sewn teddies to the skirt. We cut a shirt out of the leather and laced it using cables. We made shoulder pads using hot glue, tinfoil, chicken wire and scored cans. The horns were made from wire and rope, then spray painted. We decorated using bottle caps chains and leftover fur. All items used contributed to sustainability.
