Fine weather blessed all the outdoor events that were held here during the week.
When the last of the mega Horse carriers from all over the world pulled out of Millstreet at the weekend it marked the close of yet another long line of international equestrian events which were held at the Green Glens / Drishane Complex since early June. As always the International Millstreet Horse Trials which were held here during the week were another reason for us to be proud of our place and all that it has to offer. Competitors came from America, Canada and many other countries. Some ending their long journey by landing on the edge of town by Helicoptor.
Just one more horse event to come which is the Pony Owners Show which is held in October every year for Charity.
Our Vintage Club can be justly proud of their highly successful Vintage & Family Fun Day which they staged at our own Park on Sunday. They left no stone unturned to make sure that their show really did what it says on the tin. Again blessed with fine weather, the crowds arrived at the 1 oclock opening time and there was plenty to see and do. They had in excess of 150 entries in the Car & tractor section which gave way to endless discussion and recalling of memories. Our Fire Brigade under their leader Paula Healy/OShea, gave a demonstration of their life saving skills, including cutting a victim from a crashed car. While Billy Buckley of Inchamay Timber Craft gave a wonderful display of his skill in converting a plain log of timber into a real life looking owl in a matter of minutes while the large crowd looked on in awe. He had many more items of his craft on display including a life sized Eagle carved in palm wood for a special order. Bertie Buckley’s paintings were also an impressive feature.
Some ladies from the Red Cross offered free hand massage to anybody who wished to avail of this lovely service.
There were food stalls ,bouncing castles, Face Painting, BBQ, Craft and antique stalls .etc. and great music by Danny Creedon and Pat of ‘Back on Track’ fame.
All in all it was a wonderful Show for a wonderful Cause. The proceeds will go to the Cancer Connect Service which provides free transport to Cork Hospitals for those needing cancer treatment. So Well Done All round.
A very enjoyable event was held at the Clara Inn on Friday night when many members of the now defunct, Slanan Rovers Club, gathered to welcome home their past member Tommy Sheehan and his lovely wife Breda (O’Leary) for a holiday from sunny Australia where they have happily lived for more than thirty years.
Most schools are reopening this week and we wish both Children & Parents every success in the term ahead. Road users are asked to be extra vigilant on account of the increase of traffic on our streets and country roads. Especially at bus stops.
And still with buses I’d like to wish my son-in law Mick Dunne of Cork/Adrigole every blessing for the future as he retires today as Bus Eireann Driver following 40 years of dedicated service.
Every good wish to the Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club with a strong input from Millstreet, whose members will take on the gruelling task of cycling from Malin Head to Mison Head , on September 7th. giving themselves just four days to cover the 630kms. And we wish them fair weather.

Friday next is World Day of Prayer for the care of Creation, and to celebrate it a Service will be held in Tralee Town Park at 6.45 .and all are welcome.
With the approach of the month of September ,many leisuretime activities and classes, will be starting up again and new ones coming on stream. Be on the look out for some that will suit you and help to pass the long nights ahead. Ask at the Museum, the Canon O Donovan Centre, Marie Twomey at the Adult Learning Centre .
