“Where the Road Takes Me” on C103 at 7pm This Sunday

Sincere thanks to Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this week’s programme on Sunday 16th June 2019.  (S.R.)

Costing thirteen million euro and an expensive golf iron, the recent visit of American President Donald Trump was not controversy free.

Fifty six years and ten American Presidents earlier, John F. Kennedy was the first head of his country to drop by and say hello.  Unlike ‘The Donald’, Kennedy’s visit was a morale booster for a nation in the midst of a depression.

Unlike Kennedy, it would be difficult to imagine a photograph of Trump keeping the Pope company on Irish kitchen walls.

However, on this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene discovers that the Kennedy’s had their own little skeletons in the cupboard as well.  [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” on C103 at 7pm This Sunday”

Air Ambulance Helicopter to get the Green Light

Finally it looks like the Air Ambulance based in Rathcoole is to get the go-ahead:

“Minister for Health, Simon Harris, TD, announced today (Friday) that a new aeromedical service in the South will be launched in the coming weeks following the signing of a Service Level Agreement between the HSE and Irish Community Rapid Response.
Welcoming the news, Minister Harris said “I am delighted that a new aeromedical service in the South will commence shortly. I would like to thank the HSE National Ambulance Service and Irish Community Rapid Response for its commitment in developing this Service Level Agreement and ensuring the necessary clinical and corporate governance arrangements are such that the new service will be safe, robust and sustainable.
The service will see the establishment of a charitably funded Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in the South, which will operate from Rathcoole Aerodrome, just northeast of Millstreet, County Cork. The service will complement the existing aeromedical services and improve aeromedical access to the South of Ireland …”

Exiles: A journey through Ireland from Beara to Ballycastle

In August 2018, after walking the gruelling 700 mile Ireland Way, Dermot Breen finally arrived at his late wife’s graveside in Ballycastle, honouring a solemn promise to complete the walk in her memory and also to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

The journey took Omagh born and Belfast based writer, Dermot, over nine weeks to complete – six weeks walking and over three weeks recovering from injury, and included a night in Millstreet along the way. He has now told his fascinating story in his latest book, ‘Exiles: A journey through Ireland from Beara to Ballycastle’….

“… standing in the River Blackwater at the Bowing crossing, cooling my feet after a long day’s walk. I stayed with the wonderful Eileen O’Riordan while in Millstreet”

Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club weekly notes

Another busy week kicked off with the club adult and juvenile members taking on the Sliabh Luachra Sportive route on Bank Holiday Monday last. Both the 80 and 105 routes were undertaken and successfully completed. On the 30th of June as part of the Sliabh Luacra Sportive a 20k cycle will take Place in Memory of Willie Reen and Paud O ‘Leary. This is suitable for people of all abilities start time 9:00 and refreshments in Teach Iosagain afterwards. Plenty of time to get some training in.

This weeks competitive action included Round 2 of the Kerry County League Hill climb with Denis O Connor and Dan Murphy competing. Denis, who is in great form at present, wrapped up the weeks activities with a very credible 5th position in the Collins Cycling Centre A3 race in Boherlahan Co. Tipperary on Sunday.

The juveniles traveled to Birdhill on Saturday last to compete in the Munster Time Trial championships. The Fleming family scooped two Munster medals with Amy silver in the Girls Under 14 and Sean P bronze in the Boys under 11.

Busy week on the local front with the club holding Round 3 of the Kerry County League in Gneeveguilla on Thursday night and the inaugural Sliabh Luachra Youth races in Knocknagree on Sunday next. As part of our Youth Races we are very proud to be honouring 5 former members of the club who sadly are no longer with us in the day with commemorative perpetual cups, namely Willie Reen, Paud O Leary, Gary O Leary, Andy Davies and John Fleming. There will be some traffic disruption on both Thursday evening and Sunday and the Club would like to thank locals in advance for their support and patience.

The leisure members of the club supported the Twomey Sportive in Rockchapel, The Valley Cycle in Fossa, Killarney and The Wicklow 200 on Sunday. Training for both Juveniles and Adults continues this week.
