Walking the West Cork Way

Michael Quinn passed through Millstreet last year when walking the Ireland Way. He has made a video of his day from Millstreet to John’s Bridge, which include some lovely words for the people of Millstreet, and interview with Eily Buckley, lots of praise for Eileen O’Riordan, and had a chat with Enda, Bella and Nicky … as well as some of the scenery along the way.

“Roads and country lanes dominate this section and you may think it a boring walk but the characters I met along the way truly made this part very interesting. You’ll not get landscapes that wow but you will get a wonderful taste of the friendly people that make up north west Cork. So please watch and enjoy my adventure on the link below.”

Eily’s Report – April 16th

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my Report.

The fine weather ran out for many of our weekend events here in Millstreet, but it’s a well-known fact that when the going gets though, the tough gets going. The organisers of our weekend Feile Cheoil excelled themselves in putting up posters etc. in wind and rain, to let the people know that a few days and nights of traditional entertainment was about to begin, and the gala Ceili on Saturday night at the Wallis Arms was just the place to make you forget the raging elements outside. There were winners and losers at the various competitions but the wonderful music by the popular “Conifers “, turned the Hotel Ballroom into a place of real Traditional music, and joy.

Meanwhile at the other end of Town we had an extravanza of classical music and singing provided in our beautiful St. Patrick’s Parish Church, when the mighty voices of the Duhallow Choral Society and The Kerry Choral Union joined forces to raise funds for our Local Community Hospital. In excess of 100 voices made up the cast who filled the Sanctuary to its limit. Our church took on a cathedral-like appearance filled with light and colour and atmosphere. The very large crowd was held spellbound by their enchanting repertoire which went on non-stop, for the most of one and a half hours.

Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club weekly notes

Many thanks to the people of Millstreet for their generous contributions at our Church gate collections Saturday evening and Sunday morning, it is very much appreciated.

A very exciting Easter weekend in store for the club with SLCC tackling Ras Mumham – a four day event covering the toughest terrain Kerry has to offer.
Best of luck to the team of Richard Cleverly, Donie Kelleher, Johnny R O Sullivan along with guest riders Richard O Brien (Blarney CC) and Tom Shanahan (Limerick CC).
Denis O Connor and Dan Murphy’s are heading to Gorey for the Easter weekend riding as part of a Munster Selection Team.
Young Denis O Connor continues his rich vein of form, with a 3rd place finish in last Sunday’s Donal Crowley Memorial A3 race in Blarney. Denis was in a group of 4 that got away in atrocious conditions and was pipped by two O’Leary Stone Kanturk riders in a tight sprint finish.
Well done also to Richard Cleverly who came 10th in the A1/A2 Section of the race.
The juveniles headed to Drogheda last weekend for the superbly organised Ras Na Nog. A three stage event scheduled over 2 days with a HQ in Bellewstown Racecourse. Amy Fleming and Ben Murphy finished in the top 10 overall in their respective categories while Kate Murphy was 3rd overall U12 (Girl).
Overall the SLCC riders performed very well with a number of top 10 finishes.
Training for Juveniles interested in either leisure or competitive cycling continues every Saturday at 9am.
Well done to our club members who took part in Kenmare GAA Fund raising cycle hosted by Kenmare Cycling Club taking in the Caha Pass and Healy Pass.
New members always welcome to both adult or juvenile section of the club-learn to enjoy a great sport and gain some new friends. For further information contact 087-7023562 or the club facebook page

Concert – Wallis Arms – Saturday 13th April

Saturday night promises to be a great night for the people of Millstreet and beyond.  The 3rd Millstreet Trad Festival is hosting an evening of entertainment in The Wallis Arms Hotel.  Four of the amazing teachers who will be delivering workshops at Millstreet Community School on Saturday morning will lead a music seisiún in the hotel starting at 5pm.  So, come along and soak up the great atmosphere.
Then at 8pm the headline act will be great new trad band “The Conifers”.  This is a great young band who’s line up includes Bryan O’Leary from Turreencahill.  Bryan is known locally as the grandson of the famous Johnny O’Leary – indeed well known to those who used to frequent Dan O’Connells in Knocknagree.  The concert promises to be fantastic with a mixture of music and song from the 5 members who come from all over Ireland.
But the fun doesn’t stop there.  The Wallis Arms is our festival hub, and the music will continue after the concert:  Those who wish to just hang out are very welcome, but there will also be a Trad Disco – young James Linehan will be the DJ for this first of a kind event for Millstreet in the back room of The Wallis Arms and – who knows – there could be a breakout of tunes in the front bar as well.
Admission to the concert is €15 which includes entry to the trad disco.  But, if you just want to arrive for the disco admission is a mere €5.  Come along and see what you think!!!

Remembering RMS Titanic on “Where the Road Takes Me” This Sunday at 7pm on C103

We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s very interesting programme.  (S.R.)

This coming Monday April 15th, marks the anniversary of one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters – the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

On Where the road takes me this Sunday evening, John Greene travels to Ballydesmond to hear the story of Danny Buckley who survived the sinking.

However, Danny’s luck ran out on the battlefields of World War one, when a sniper’s bullet ended his life, just a few short days before the war had ended.

At the American wake in Ballydesmond the night before he departed on the Titanic, Danny stood and sang ‘When the fields are white with daisies’. [read more …] “Remembering RMS Titanic on “Where the Road Takes Me” This Sunday at 7pm on C103″
