Hand Made Furniture

My name is Noel Murphy, and I would love to share with you some of my wonderful creations in wood. I’m a member of the Cork and the Kerry Woodturning Guild… I love to “rescue” and repurpose wood, and to create beautiful works of art with wood that has been overlooked by others as rubbish or just left to die where it falls. Have a look at what is currently available in my shop and contact me when you find something you like. Don’t delay, it may sell very quickly, and each piece is one-of-a-kind!

Lance Corporal Paul Denehey

On June 6th 1965 an Australian Soldier was gored by a wild elephant while on patrol along the Sabah Border in Borneo, suffering for days and eventually dying alone in the jungle. His name was Paul Harold Denehey, a descendant of Philip Dennehy and Mary Collins, who had left Millstreet in the 1800’s for Australia shortly after they married, settling in Snug, Tasmania.

After his death, he was buried in Singapore, but now his family are battling to have him repatriated to Australia. Support them and see some of the fruits of their work can be seen on their page to him: Bring Paul Home-as offered in 1975 Buried in Singapore since 1965. Below is the newspaper report from the Melbourne Herald at the time of his death:

“Where the Road Takes Me” This Sunday Evening at 7pm on C103

Many thanks to Presenter, John Greene for advance information regarding this evening’s programme on C103 (14th July 2019 – Bastille Day – so very special greetings to all our French Friends)  – S.R.

Many are the links between Ireland and France such as the above French Restaurant near Dublin’s Grafton Street. We here in Millstreet treasure our Twinning Links with our wonderful Friends in Pommerit le Vicomte. Very best wishes and greetings to France and especially to Brittany on this Bastille Day 14th July 2019. (S.R.)

In the early 1950’s residents of the Gaoire near Macroom were offered approximately forty pounds per acre under compulsory purchase of their land.

Compulsory purchase, when enforced, usually allows a public infrastructure to go ahead for the common good.  In this instance, construction of the Lee Valley Hydro Electric Scheme was deemed to be for the common good.  Electricity at the time was making its way slowly but surely into rural Ireland.

In the second programme on ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene returns to what was once the village of Annahalla, before being flooded in 1954.

Now a statutory nature reserve and a walker’s paradise, the area was once home to many families, including a future Bishop of Cork and a college president.

Vorsprung Durch Technic

Since the 1980s, Audi have been using the catchphrase ‘vorsprung durch technik’ in their advertisments. It is usually translated into English as ‘progress through technology’,  capitalizing on the German reputation for technical expertise.

But it was advertising execeutive Sir John Hegarty who coined the phrase for the advertisments. He is a descendant of one Jeremiah Hegarty, known in Millstreet as ‘The Landlord’ who had large business enterprises here in the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Jeremiah’s name is given to Hegarty Street (above the AIB), where he had a creamery, and where he built the houses for his workers. See the video below where John talks about how the phrase came about:

Plans for the new Childrens Playground

Millstreet  Town Park Committee are pleased to share below the proposed plans for our next project a full refurbishment of our children’s playground (last overhauled over 25 years  ago) for the benefit of our  growing population of under twelves.

We want to bring our playground in line with the rest of our fantastic amenity and make it a fun, healthy, inclusive and safe place for all our little people.  This upgrade is set to cost approximately €120,000.   On average our yearly income for the total running of the   Town Park grounds is €15,000 (Local Lotto and club subs) with annual recurring costs of a minimum of €8000, on insurance, gym equipment maintenance and machine repair alone.

We have secured a grant of €14,000 from  Cork County Council, subject to completion of  the works, and are making progress on further funding.  However, we still face a significant shortfall.  We are therefore calling on all “Sraiders”, past and present, at home and away and all users of our fantastic Town Park,  to dig deep and make whatever financial contribution you can to support this  project.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED PLEASE

If you wish to make a contribution you may:
(i) lodge directly online to Millstreet Town Park Committee back account at IBAN: IE61 BOFI 9058 0332 1050 69, BIC:BOFIIE2D, or
(ii) send a cheque payable to ” Millstreet Town Park Committee” care of FÁS Offices, Millstreet Community Gym,  Millstreet.

We will also shortly be appealing to the local businesses  in Millstreet for assistance with the financing of this project.  With help from right across our community we hope to get this refurbishment underway.

If you wish to confirm your contribution and  share your story of growing  up down the Lawn we would be delighted to hear from you at  <millstreettownpark@gmail.com>

Finally, without  the  additional financial support from you,  the  people of Millstreet, we fear for the future viability of the playground in its current condition for the children of Millstreet – the future of our community.

Thank you
Millstreet Town Park Committee
Chairman Denis  Twomey, Secretary Denis Hickey, Treasurer Geraldine O’Leary
