A Day of Floods

Last night brought torrential rain to Munster, but Millstreet seems to have been one of the worst affected spots. The rain gauge at Tubrid measured 78.1mm from when the rain started at 8pm last night to when it stopped at lunch time today. After a very wet fortnight, all this excess rain had nowhere to go but into the rivers which  flooded everywhere. The river gauge at Keale Bridge  reached its maximum at about 2:30pm today, and flooding has been going down quickly since. Below are some photos of the flooding from around Millstreet.

Eily’s Report – 23rd February

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my weekly report.

Once again the wind is howling down the chimney, coupled with torrential rain. It has pounded our world without a break for many weeks now, and then when we got some lovely sunny hours on Saturday and Sunday can anyone blame us for getting out and making the most of them. It’s a whole month since I ventured out and had no inclination to go because of the weather as well as the lockdown but the warmth of the sun and the smell of the freshness in the air,  was a God-given invitation to get my five k’s. Lots of others got the same notion, because the world outside had come to life since the last time I was out. It was a joy to see them heading up the mountains leaving the car parked for once and stretching the legs. For obvious reasons I travelled in my car, travelled the highroads towards Mushera where I encountered large numbers of people of all ages. Some on foot others like myself driving  plus a good number of elderly folk being taken out for the day by a caring friend or family member. It was all there to be enjoyed and savoured, before the next bout of storm and rain.     A gift from God to be grateful for.

Seeking an editor

I drafted a manuscript titled “100 Letters from Ireland” based on letters my grandmother Bella Murphy Barker wrote from 1922-1923 while she, my mother and aunt were visiting my great grandmother Jude Sugrue Murphy in Knocknaloman. I am seeking an editor to review the manuscript before I publish and I will gladly pay for the service.

“Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103

We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s programme – 21st Feb. 2021 at 7pm on C103.  (S.R.)

After bringing you stories of battles on ‘Where the road takes me’ recently, we bring you a story of music this week on the programme.

We also need to borrow that well worn cliché – ‘Even the sewing-machine was a Singer’ – because that’s the best way to describe the famous Keane family from Galway, most notably Dolores and Seán.

This week, John Greene invites you to eavesdrop on a conversation with Seán Keane.  The story has everything – Happiness,  stress, loneliness, romance, heartbreak, legal battles that never seemed to end, but also success and of course music – plenty of it.

Overall, it’s the story of an extremely talented man, with a refreshing outlook on life. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

Clan Callaghan….The O Callaghan Family of County Cork…Book Reissued

Clan Callaghan…..The O Callaghan Family of County Cork

Maureen Phibbs from Co. Wicklow (formerly Maureen Hickey of Cullen) is Editor of the renowned “Irish Roots” Magazine and has recently been in touch with us in regard to an important Book which has just been reissued.  Maureen writes:

“The author is Joseph F. O Callaghan, (the “O” is without the apostrophe throughout the book)  now aged about 93 and living in the US. He is professor Emeritus of Medieval History, Fordham University. He first published the book in 2004 after spending many years researching the history of the O Callaghans. The revised and updated edition is now just published. It traces the fate of the O Callaghans from the tenth to the twentieth century including the O Callaghans along the Blackwater valley from Mallow to Clonmeen against the background of local and national history. It has copious notes, 16 genealogical tables of family trees and the bibliography is an excellent research tool for anybody studying local or national history.

His father, William, was born at Dromcummer.

We are featuring the book in the next issue of “Irish Roots” which has just gone to print.  We are publishing which is really the 10th article in the Clan Callaghan book.

Cost of Book in case anyone is interested.
Revised edition 2020. 302 pages. (A4 size) €34 www.amazon.co.uk or www.amazon.com or from other fine booksellers.”
