Pictured yesterday at Kippagh is a Large Flowered Butterworth, currently in bloom in the hills around Millstreet. It is a native of the upland acid bogs of Cork and Kerry. While it has beautiful flowers, the leaves below are carnivorous!! Insects walk or fly onto the leaves, which roll at their edges to prevent escape – an unlikely occurrence – since butterworts possess the strongest natural glues known. These leaves exude enzymes which digest certain parts of the insect’s body, the plant absorbing essential nourishment. After digestion the dry insect husk blows away. Butterworts overwinter as rootless resting buds. (You can see the insects on the leaves above 💀) [read more …] “The Large Flowered Butterworth”

Now I am bound for a far foreign shore
Farewell to the schoolmates I left in Rathmore
Like wise Nohovil that was once dear to me, and my fond relations is sweet Knocknagree.
Farewell and adieu to each smiling lass with whom I had many a pint and a glass, it is on them I’d ponder wherever I roam and my heart it will wander far back to my home.
Farewell to Millstreet that neat little town of honour, and beauty, of fame, and renown, of pleasure, and pastime and sweet unity, and those distant fond objects remind me of thee
Farewell to the groves round sweet Coomlegane
the pond and the castle to the East lies Drishane
Charming Mount Leader with its murmuring rills,
and its tapering heather grows tall o’er the hills.
Farewell to Kilmeedy that romantic maze that stood so attractive to the travellers gaze
With its gigantic walls that were built in days of yore, by that once proud chieftain called McCarthy Mor
In the West Clara Mountain comes next in my view where from each crystal fountain its source did persue
Where the verdure of Spring and the heather flowers grow and the bright milk maid singing in that valley below,
Its down by that Mountain by each cooling shade by Clara and Mt Leader right oft times I strayed and its heathery slopes where I once laid my brow and its castles and cascades of the banks of Finnow
The Aubane Social Club are hosting a Public Meeting at Aubane Community Centre on tonight Tuesday 14 May at 8.00 pm.This Meeting is in relation to the condition of the Bridges at Aubane Creamary and at the approach of Aubane Community Centre and the condition of the Tooreenbawn Road which is very dangerous. Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my report. .
The fine spell goes on and spirits are rising more with every sunny day .And all those who took part in the Darkness into Light walk were compensated for their efforts by the Heaven Sent Dawn of that day. Very few homes in the country were without a representative walking for this great cause in aid of suicide prevention and we pray that the outcome will bear fruit a hundred fold. The crowds get bigger every year and it’s becoming a fact that if you do it once you’ll never miss it again.
The Monthly meeting of the Community Council will be held at the Wallis Arms tonight starting at nine, all members please attend.
