The fun starts at 12 noon with the Teddy Bears Picnic and will go on to an afternoon tea at 3 pm, with live music and lots more followed with a BBQ.  Its open to all ages, so do come along and be part of our great Millstreet Party in the Park.

“Where the Road Takes Me” C103 This Sunday at 7pm

We thank Presenter John Greene for providing advance information on this evening’s programme – 21st July 2019.  (S.R.)

On this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene begins a two part programme entitled ‘The Light-keeper’s daughter, and the story of U260.

Our story centres around the scuttling of a German submarine, three miles south of Glandore in 1945, and the arrest of all crew aboard her.

The events are seen through the eyes of Mary Glanville, now Mary mcCarthy a twelve year old schoolgirl  on the Galley Head lighthouse at the time.

Although this submarine was on its ninth patrol when it reached West Cork waters, it had seen very little if any action.

So what exactly was it doing during these patrols, and what reason did the crew have for sinking this vessel of war.  And why has the Captain’s logbook been resealed, and not to be re-opened until the year 2045.

In both programmes we look at the two main theories for her sinking, but can only speculate as to what she was doing in the area on that date.

Both programmes also offer an unique insight into what life was like for rural people during World War 11. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” C103 This Sunday at 7pm”

Millstreet Playground Update

Millstreet Town Park Committee would like to respond to the comments, regarding the refurbishment of the playground :

Firstly, in relation to having exercise equipment close to the playground – we currently have 6 exercise machines within 30 metres of the playground. As these machines are for use for 14-year old and older, we feel that they would be used by children if they were any closer.

Regarding grants from Cork County Council, Millstreet Town Park are very grateful to Cork County Council for the current grant of €14,000, and for previous grants of €3,000 for the installation of the bollards, and €15,000 towards the fitness equipment. Please note that we are currently working with Cork County Council for a Clár grant to the value of €50,000.

Finally, regarding the request for a zip wire, this has been discussed at our meetings, and we hope to put one in place by 2021. There is a lot more we would like to do, but unfortunately, we cannot afford it at the moment.

Finally, we appeal to people to please continue supporting the local lotto, as this is our main source of income, and the future of our Town Park depends on it being supported.  [read more …] “Millstreet Playground Update”

Delivering Excellence to the table

Eily’s Report – 16th July

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my report.
Following the parade the presenting of prizes to former winners was held at the podium outside the Wallis Arms Hotel, and then the real fun began when the visitors joined in with the locals, for food, drinks and music which set the precedent for the following five days. And ended with a gala banquet at the Green Glens on Saturday night. During the week they climbed our mountains, visited our beauty spots and shopped in the town. Many promising to come back .The International  Mounted Games Championships, lived up to all that was expected of them from July 8th to 14th here in Millstreet. The opening parade through the town on Tuesday evening was a truly wonderful sight. Riders  as young as twelve years of age and adults from 17 European countries on spirited ponies prancing through our streets each displaying the flags of the homelands and wearing many coloured outfits . They were led by our much admired pipe band. Public Safety was all important and the streets were lined on both sides with interlinked fencing. The crowds came in their hundreds and enjoyed the spectacle in brilliant sunshine. Our friendly Garda members on hand to see that all went well.
