What an historic day it has been (Wednesday, 20th Jan. 2021) not only for the USA but for the world with the Inauguration of President Joe Biden – 46th American President – today at Capitol Hill, Washington. He is the second Catholic President. The first Catholic President – John F. Kennedy was inaugurated on this day 60 years ago. Both have had Irish Ancestors – President Kennedy linked with Wexford and President Biden with Ballina, Co. Mayo and with Carlingford, Co. Louth. We wish the new President every Blessing and Success in his all-important role in the next four years. (S.R.)
In memory of our father John Linehan, we have decided to run a GoFundMe, in aid of the CUH Oncology Ambulatory Centre and Marymount Hospice. The majority of the funds will go to the Ambulatory Centre in CUH. This service is absolutely vital, because cancer patients are so immunosuppressed, in many emergency situations it’s too risky to enter A&E. The Oncology Ambulatory Centre provides a dedicated A&E clinic specifically for cancer patients, thereby saving countless lives, purely by saving the patients from the huge infection risk of a normal A&E. It is vital that this service is funded, but as of right now, it is severely underfunded, and only able to function from 9-5 Monday to Friday. This service helped Dad countless times, and saved his life when regular A&E wouldn’t have been able to. In his memory, we are determined to help fund this unit, because if it can provide any patient the care it provided our dad, it is genuinely priceless.

We live in historic times, tomorrow 20.1.2021 Joe Biden will be inaugurated as the new President of the United States of America. Never in the history of that mighty state or indeed of the world did this event attract some much interest or publicity. Every eye in the World is on the Big Smoke at these tense times. I suppose there isn’t one place in the world that is not affected one way or another by what goes on the United States. We are inclined to look on America as a Big Brother, a force that is there standing between us and the big bad world and when something significant or threatening happens there, who can blame us if we get worried. We think of the many thousands of our people who are living there and how the various happenings affect them, and goodness knows we have seen enough of strange happenings in the past five years which keep us the edge of our seats all the time. They say that power is a very dangerous thing if it gets into the wrong hands. Need I say more. Five years ago the world could see that Donald Trump was not a suitable man to rule the USA. It showed right throughout his campaign. His lack of respect for people, especially women, his overbearing attitude towards the rule of law, climate change and so on and to think that this crazy monster had his finger on the button that had the power to sink the world into all out war and destruction. I asked my American friends that time, if they voted for Trump and they said they did and in view of the ways that he portrayed himself I asked them why. The answer was that the hated Hillary Clinton was that enough to plunge their homeland into ruin. These are highly religious people. They think differently today. All attention will focus on the media until Mr Biden is safely in the chair . Narcissism is a terrible ailment which gives no caring thought for anybody else and with a narcissist like Donal Trump at the helm anything could happen. It’s curable but the person involved has to agree to be treated, I can’t see Donald Trump agreeing any time soon or maybe one day he will see the light and allow himself to be transformed into a nice man. We won’t hold our breadth. Pray that Joe Biden’s inauguration will all go according to plan. le cúnamh Dé

We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s programme – 17th Jan. 2021 at 7pm on C103. (S.R.)
On this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene concludes the two part programme on the Cork Butter Road and the elusive man who built it in 1747. Kilcummin based genealogist Rachel Foley traces the background to John Murphy from Castleisland.
Singer Seán Ó Sé wonders if his Grandfather was the first courier in Irish history. (Carrying butter to the Cork Buttermarket for his neighbours from the Beara peninsula with horse and cart.)
And after thriving worldwide as an industry for 150 years, the Cork Butter market unbelievably failed to move with the times and paid the price for it. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103 Features “The Butter Road””

We extend our sincere sympathy to Eileen’s daughter, Megan and to all the O’Leary Family of Louisville, Kentucky, USA on the very sad departure of Eileen Murphy to Eternal Heavenly Reward. R.I.P.. Eileen was a True Lady of the very highest calibre – caring, optimistic, witty, friendly, spiritual, generous and sincere. We had the great privilege of meeting with Eileen during her October 2019 visit to Millstreet. She felt so much at home here and was especially thrilled to visit Adrivale from where her ancestors emigrated to USA some five generations ago. She was so looking forward to revisiting Millstreet with her brother Michael and Elwood later this year. It was Eileen’s brother, Patrick W. O’Leary who established such wonderfully strong links with Millstreet which have been growing stronger and stronger over the years to the extent that the Family has been so generously supportive of so many Millstreet (and Macroom) Projects. On this Tuesday on Cork Music Station we shall broadcast a special tribute to Eileen on “Radio Treasures” to which she was a weekly Loyal Listener. Mass will be celebrated for Eileen in St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet on Tuesday, 2nd February 2021 at 7.30pm and this may be viewed on www.churchservices.tv/millstreet
