Eily’s Report – 25th June

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my report.

The lashing rain all day on Sunday put paid to lots of  well  planned outdoor events. For the first time in many many years our Corpus Christi Procession had to be cancelled on Sunday. But to avoid disappointment, Canon John adopted Plan B. At the last minute and when he had finished the 11.30 Mass  he dressed himself in the heavy brocade vestments and  exposed the Blessed Sacrament for Benediction. The First Holy Communion Children who were dressed up for the procession through the town went in formation within the church led by Canon John carrying the Blessed Sacrament . The quick thinking of the  organist & choir provided the customary hymns. Following the blessing our pastor recited the Blessed be God prayer and the choir brought the Benediction to an end with their rendering of Tantum Ergo. Everybody agreed that it was a beautiful inpromtu ceremony.  Baoichas le Dia.

The Church Choir is now off for the Summer.

Changes In Millstreet

From Europe and Asia and Africa and places near and far away
They came to the Parish of Millstreet to stay
Nowadays different races of black, white and brown
You are likely to meet in and near Millstreet Town

And a difference to Millstreet with them they did bring
And this in itself is a wonderful thing
Their music, song and dance things refreshening and new
Of multiculturalism the good things are more than a few

The Millstreet of the past was a monocultural place
A Town and Parish of only one race
But time does bring change as the wise one does say
And great changes are happening in Duhallow today

And change for the better good things only add
And for any community cannot be bad
And those who oppose change for the better in their thinking all wrong
Nobody owns any Country since to a Country you belong [read more …] “Changes In Millstreet”

Remembering Philomena Lynott on “Where the Road Takes Me” This Sunday on C103 at 7pm

Sincere thanks to Presenter, John Greene, for advance information on this Sunday’s programme.  (S.R.)

On Monday last, Philomena Lynott, mother of rock star Phil Lynott was laid to rest in Dublin.

A regular visitor to West Cork, she had featured on a number of editions of ‘Where the road takes me’.

On this week’s edition of the programme, John Greene looks back at a number of conversations he had with her.

Her early life was spent in what was then referred to as ‘A home for unmarried mothers’, where she was the victim of physical and mental cruelty.

The latter part was spent campaigning to have her son’s music and talent remembered, but his lifestyle avoided.

She speaks about her last few days with her rock star son,  and being the last to know about the drug-abuse that killed him.

We hear from Trevor Thompson from Douglas Road in Cork, regarded by Philomena as her son’s biggest fan.

Ivertec Broadband – Good or Bad?

A few months ago, Ivertec started offering broadband without phone lines  from their transmitter on the top of Clara, offering speed of up to 100Mbps,  with the ability to serve areas that can’t get broadband through their phone line, and maybe even faster than the service in town . We’re wondering if some of the people that signed up for their service can let us know how the Ivertec service is , and what sort of speeds they are getting.
To test the speed, just go to broadbandspeedtest.ie and press the GO button, and please send us the results please, either in a comment below, to <contact@millstreet.ie>, or to our Facebook
