Music for Marie: The Shandrum Céilí Band in Concert This Sunday at 8pm in Knocknagree Church

A night of celebration and remembrance for Marie Collins who passed away in January 2018 will take place on the August Bank Holiday Sunday (4th) in Knocknagree Church, Co. Cork and all proceeds are going to Sudden Adult Death Ireland. In store for those in attendance is an evening of traditional music, song and dance hosted by Three-in-a-row All-Ireland Champions, The Shandrum Céilí Band.

Concert organiser Timmy Collins said: My mom, Marie, has been described as a pillar of the community and was adored by many. Originally from Knocknagree, she married my Dad, Danny, in 1992 and made the big move to Doon, Kiskeam. She loved music and bestowed upon me, more so than anyone else, my love and loyalty for Sliabh Luachra music. I also got my skill for organisation and social media from her, long before she set up her business DigiPulse Marketing. We will remember and celebrate her at this very special event – Ní hé líon na bport, ach feabhas an cheoil.

The Shandrum Céilí Band have nearly 200 years of experience in playing traditional Irish music and dozens of medals at all levels, in Fleadh, Scór, Siansa Gael Linn and others.

Indeed, a little-known fact is that many of them are set dancers themselves, some even winning titles at All-Ireland level. They understand the dancers’ need for lively rhythmic music. The band has a dedicated following across the country and even the world. The band was in existence from the 1950s to the 1970s and, with their blessing, the current band was established in December 2014. They are based in North Cork but can regularly appear in almost any county playing for set dancers. They entered the history books in 2015 for being one of the only bands ever to win an All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band title in their first year competing. They went on in the following years to do it again, making them one of only a handful of bands to achieve the coveted “Three-in-a-row”.

The concert will be held in Knocknagree Church on 4th August 2019 at 8pm, with family, friends and fans in attendance. Tickets can be purchased from the family or online at MusicForMarie.com where you can also make a donation if you so wish. On the night, the ten-piece band will reprise some of their winning arrangements as well as tracks from their CDs; it’s quite simply traditional Irish music at its very best. From toe-tapping jigs and reels to tuneful waltzes and hornpipes, this concert is unmissable.

  1. Many of your relatives of DOONASLEEN had the gift of MUSIC in their blood going back to the 1700’s. Among them Padarig O’Keeffe who spent his early years with his grandmother ABBEY DONNACA, and attended UMERABOY school, known as DOON school.

  2. My mother, Margaret Buckley (b. 1909, Park, Knocknagree) often told me she didn’t care what a “fella” looked like only if he had two legs and could dance. Glad to see the Sliabh Luchra legacy living on.
