Eily’s Report – 24th April

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a Chairde and welcome.

I hope you enjoyed the lovely weather over the weekend. It’s lovely to see cows out in some fields, while others were able to cut the precious grass and bring it in to feed their stock. It is amazing what can be achieved in time of crisis.  Retrieving the lush growth from around Cork Airport was certainly a first, and only goes to show the amount of  feed that has been lost and wasted over the years.

But first things first. I want to send good wishes to a host of people today. A Very Happy 104th birthday to the sprightly Julia Murphy, Ballydaly. A Grand party was held in her honour at the Canon O Donovan Centre last week where she read her greetings cards without glasses.  And still with Ballydaly, Jerry Lehane and his lovely wife Marie  are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. While mé féin and the renowned Joanne O’Riordan, celebrate our birthdays every year on April 24th.

The AGM of the Lotto committee was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Saturday night.  Following the business of the meeting and the election of officers, all those involved in this wonderful Millstreet fundraiser, were invited to a grand buffet meal. In excess of forty people in all are involved in the weekly running of our lotto. And it is the life line of all sections of the local GAA, the Town Park, and the Youth Amenity Complex. The existing committee was re-elected in block.

A very interesting event will be held at the Community School on this Thursday night, entitled “Don’t Throw it Out Throw it On” Encouraging us to reuse our clothes, rather than binning them. Starts at 7.30 and all are welcome.

Our Tidy Towns Group held their first Clean-Up last Saturday and we are all asked to put our shoulders to the wheel, in whatever way we can, to make Millstreet a better cleaner place.

Following the mighty  European Mounted Games which were held here at the Green Glens last year, the organisers were overwhelmed by the way they were welcomed to Millstreet. In all the countries that they travelled, there was never a welcoming parade, The Pipe Band led all the riders through the town, past the reviewing stand in the Square, and down to the Green Glens. As a mark of the their gratitude,  their Chairman, Mr.Conor O’Leary presented cheques for €500 to the Community Council and €200 to the Pipe Band, and because of the grand welcome that they received here, the World Finals of the Mounted Games will be held here in Millstreet next year. So all those who helped can take a bow.

Here are the results of this week’s lotto draw which was held at Corkery’s Bar on Sunday night. Numbers drawn were 3,5,19,24 and the Jackpot was not won.
