This week on Where the road takes me we continue and conclude our two part programme on Tom Crean a true hero in the history of Polar exploration.
This week John Greene meets his Grand-daughter Aileen and her partner Bill Sheppard, who along with her two sons attempt to follow in Crean’s
footsteps, exactly one hundred years after his third and final expedition to the Antarctic. After an 800 nautical mile journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia, Crean, Shackleton and Worsley managed the first crossing of the mountainous island to seek help for their comrades still stranded back on Elephant island.
One hundred years later, after breaking her leg, his Grand-daughter
discovers that out on the Antarctic, there are no emergency services to call upon.
We also meet Mike Barry, the first Irishman to reach the South Pole. After building a replica lifeboat of the ‘James Caird’, Barry and his colleagues attempt Crean’s 800 nautical mile (1500KM) epic sea crossing from Elephant Island to South Georgia. And……
Aidan Dooley talks about his one-man show ‘Tom Crean – Arctic Explorer’. After playing to forty people initially
in Tralee, and receiving the seal of approval from Crean’s daughters,
fifteen years later the show is still filling seats all over the world.
