Two of the reasons regularly put forward for the survival of traditional music in Ireland are that the country was not one of the battlegrounds in either of the two world wars, and also that our economy was largely agricultural, where tradition usually lives and thrives.
In a four part programme on ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene looks at some of the other reasons, like the influences of some of our most talented musicians, composers and collectors.
We look at the enormous contribution of Irish traditional music collector and Anglican Minister Canon James Goodman, curate of Ardgroom, Rector of Skibbereen and Canon of Ross in the late nineteenth century.
We feature renowned tin whistle player Mary Bergin, former De Danann box player Jackie Daly from Kanturk, and fiddle player Matt Crannitch from Rathduff.
In programme one this Sunday evening we go to the Beara Peninsula to examine the influence of the modest but very talented Dwyer family as musicians and composers.
