Cork v Tipp: Good luck Mark

A few short years ago we were thrilled when Mark Ellis became the first Millstreet hurler on the Cork Senior Hurling team. Now in command of the centre back spot he is one of the senior players on the team, much is expected of him and others as Cork take on Tipperary today with a host of new players.

Cork beat Tipp in the league earlier in the year, but Tipp are smarting a big defeat in the league final. Expect Mark to drop back in front of his full back to help prevent goals, but it won’t be easy for Cork today against the All Ireland champions.

Munster SHC quarter-final: Tipperary v Cork, Semple Stadium, 4pm. There will be live coverage of the game on RTÉ2 (TV), RTE Radio, C103, Radio na Gaeltachta with updates on Cork’s 96FM, Red FM, Cork GAA website and Twitter page, but nothing beats being there!

Result: Tipperary 1-16 Cork 2-27 🙂 A great game, and Mark played a blinder also. see more below:

Match Programme: Interview with Mark – in today’s match programme there is an interview with Mark

The42: Six players to watch as Cork and Tipperary battle for a Munster SHC semi-final spot – #1 Mark Ellis: Ellis is holding down the pivotal centre half back position for Cork. Last year, he was nursing a broken arm until before the championship. This year, Ellis played in all of Cork’s League games and is a crucial figure for the Rebels as they attempt to keep out a potentially lethal Tipp attack.

Evening Echo: Brave Cork have stacked their chips on winning a shoot-out – Mark Ellis will probably sit back on the edge of the D with someone else expected to pick up the Tipp centre-forward.

Pundit Arena: What Are The Chances Of Cork Springing The Mother And Father Of All Surprises In Thurles? – In Mark Ellis, Christopher Joyce and Coleman, the Rebels have a line that are capable of getting on top.

On the Game
=========================

All-Ireland hurling champions Tipperary suffer shock defeat by Cork – …Darragh Fitzgibbon had a fine game in the centre of the field while Mark Ellis and captain Stephen McDonnell were superb in defence…

Back in the Big Time – … Bill Cooper made his presence felt at midfield in the second half when Mark Ellis really came into his own at centre back, while…

Thurles didn’t have it all… It turns out you can have too much of a good thing – … few would argue with the observation that Cork centre-back Mark Ellis had a fine game last Sunday, yet his direct opponent Michael Breen hit 0-6 from play.

Stats showed why Rebels roared – …Michael Breen did hit six points from play from the half-forward line but Mark Ellis was also excellent. He showed huge leadership but so did most of Cork’s main men, especially Lehane…

Corkness yes, but a return to Tippness? – … It allowed Christopher Joyce and Mark Ellis to create a platform in the half-back line … Joyce, Ellis and Coleman were given an opportunity to look like Tommy, JJ and Brian Hogan. That should never happen…

After some dark days the new blood has revitalised the Rebels – … Mark Ellis gave a towering display too, particularly after half-time and there is a lot more settlement now in defence than there has been…

Mark was landed on his ass, but his tackle on Shane Curran saved a near certain goal

Mark wasn’t the only local one on the pitch on the day. Tom O’Leary was seen on the TV cameras congratulating the Cork manager.
