Death Notice: Sr Marie Linehan

Sr.Marie LinehanSister Marie Linehan (Formerly Sister Marie Urban) April 22, 1931 to April 19, 2016 Sister Marie dedicated her life to others; living a committed life as a Sister of St. Francis for 65 years. She died at St. Ann Convent on April 19th, 2016, just three days before her 85th birthday. She was dedicated to each person she met in her ministries. This included children in orphanages, children as students, adults in hospitals, hospice patients in their homes and nursing homes. Her final commitment was prayer ministry at St. Ann Convent. These ministries were located in Portland and Klamath Falls, Oregon as well as in Spokane and Tacoma in Washington. Sr. Maria was born in Doon, Kiskeam, County Cork, Ireland. Her Irish hospitality and spirit were enjoyed by many individuals. She had quick wit with a great sense of humor. This was cleverly incorporated into her daily work and frequently brought fun and surprise to her coworkers. Sister Marie loved her family very much. Her room is filled with pictures of several generations celebrating life and special events. She is survived by her brother, Dan Linehan of Co. Cork Ireland, sister, Norine Fitzpatrick of Walnut Creek, California, as well as her numerous nieces and nephews. Sister Marie’s Vigil will be held at St. Ann Convent at 6pm on Friday, April 22nd, on her birthday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00am Saturday, April 23, 2016 also in the chapel at St. Ann Convent. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Sr. Marie is the sister of Jerry Linehan that lived in Millstreet after retiring from California.His wife (Kathleen) and him had a home around the corner from Station Road on the same side of the road as the Malpaso. Sister Maries`s Neice (Breda Dineen) lives close to the railway station off of Station Road. – with thanks to Mike for letting us know.

Franciscan sister dies, had ministered mostly in child care
Sister Marie Linehan, O.S.F.

Sister Marie Linehan, O.S.F., formerly Sister Maria Urban, died in St. Ann Convent in Tacoma, Washington, on April 19. She was 84 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 66 years.

Sister Marie (Mary Linehan) was born in County Cork, Ireland. Although she entered the congregation in 1945, she did not officially enter candidacy until 1948. She professed her first vows in 1950. Her sister, Sister Carmel Joseph Linehan (deceased), was also a member of the congregation.

Sister Marie ministered primarily in education, child care and pastoral services, particularly in the Archdiocese of Seattle for 23 years. She served as a house parent at St. Ann Home in Tacoma for 17 years. In 2010 she returned to Tacoma where she lived at St. Ann Convent and served in prayer ministry until her death.

Sister Marie also served for 35 years in the Diocese of Spokane, including 11 years as a house parent at St. Joseph Children’s Home. She also taught for a short period of time at St. Charles School. In later years she served as a chaplain at Sacred Heart Medical Center and as a volunteer at Hospice of Spokane.

Additional ministry experience included her work in the Baker Diocese where she taught at Sacred Heart Academy in Klamath Falls.

Sister Marie’s funeral Mass was celebrated April 23 at St. Ann Convent in Tacoma. She is survived by her brother, Dan Linehan; her sister, Norine Fitzpatrick; her nieces and nephews and by her Franciscan family.
