We wish to extend our heartfelt and sincere sympathy to the dear Parents and the entire Family and Friends of the late Eimear O’Mahony, Inchileigh, Millstreet who so very sadly has gone to her Eternal Reward. Beautiful Eimear whose totally wonderful smile, sincere friendliness and constant cheerfulness brought real sunshine into the lives of so many – will be very greatly missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.
I got to meet Eily Buckley (for whom I’m presently deputising) during the week and the inspiring Eily wishes to extend her deep appreciation for the many supportive messages which she has been receiving.
Millstreet International Horse Trials this weekend – 29th and 30th August is attracting participants from several nations. The focus on the Saturday 29th will be at the very colourful Green Glens Arena while the exquisite Drishane Estate will be the focus on Sunday and this is now being so very comprehensively prepared and should look truly magical for the highly prestigious International Equestrian Event on Sunday.
And the very same Sunday, 30th August sees the annual September Horse Fair in Millstreet Town – a tradition which has been ongoing from the distant past.
On Saturday, 29th August members of Millstreet Twinning Committee will depart from Millstreet to celebrate in Pommerit le Vicomte the 30th Anniversary of our Breton/Irish Twinning. It’s a true credit to all in both Brittany and Ireland for having so dedicatedly strengthened the very real bond between our two communities over the past thirty years.
Due to the Trojan efforts of Millstreet Tidy Towns Millstreet Town and its suburbs are looking splendid for our international visitors.
Millstreet Pipe Band playing at the Béal na mBláth annual Commemoration featured on RTÉ’s main News bulletins last Sunday night.
Pádraig Pearse’s historic visit to Millstreet in 1915 was commemorated in grand style last Saturday night with Sgt. Paul Lynch and his dedicated Garda Team superbly coordinating the traffic flow as the very impressive plaque was unveiled at Corkery’s Bar, West End. A full pictorial feature is scheduled to appear on millstreet.ie .
And another very special event during this National Heritage Week will take place this Sunday, 30th August when the Barry Family Lackabawn Vintage will host an Open Day with Industrial & Design as the Theme at their exquisite setting in Lackabawn, Millstreet. The proceeds are in aid of Millstreet Day Care Centre.
MILLSTREET COMMUNITY COUNCIL: Official opening of the new gym in the Youth Centre on Monday 31st August at 7.30p.m. All welcome.
A new book by Jim O’Malley of Beaufort, Co. Kerry containing his very interesting experiences encountered during his walking the complete length of the River Blackwater in the recent past will soon be published. More details on our Millstreet website.
Among the many mighty successes achieved in this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Sligo we also extend sincere congrats. to Siobhán Ní Bhuachalla of Rathcoole on coming first in the Irish Harp Slow Airs Over-18 All-Ireland competition.

Millstreet Town Park , GAA & Youth Amenity Fund coordinates the weekly Local Lottery which this week had a Jackpot of €2,800.00. Winning numbers drawn at the Malpaso Bar, Main Street were: 10, 11, 6 and 4. The Jackpot was not won. €100 went to Tom & Leo c/o Corkery’s Bar with €50 going to Patsy Mac as the Seller of the €100 ticket. €50 went to Seán Lawlor, Main Street. €20 went to each of the following: Frank Brosnan, Rathduane; Justina Lynam, Main Street; Tara Scully c/o O’Riordans, Glenrath; K. Lots more wonderful visitors were recently welcomed to Millstreet Museum including Denny Long and also relations of the famous Fr. Dineen whose Irish Dictionary is world famous. We thank Michael and Veronica O’Callaghan for presenting the Museum with very interesting original documentation relating to the Pope’s visit to Phoenix Park, Dublin in 1979.
The front cover of this week’s “RTÉ Guide”features Aileen Hickie of The Square, Millstreet and her husband Matt Cooper. A splendid feature is also contained within based on an interview with both Matt and Aileen.
On 22nd August the Coffee Morning in Aid of the Friends of Marymount Hospice at Aubane Community Centre realised well in excess of €1,100.00 for the praiseworthy cause. Those attending were also presented with a free CD copy of the splendid song composed by Mairéad Biggane (nee Kelleher of Aubane) sung by Noel O’Leary and entitled “My Secret”.

With Bernard O’Donoghue as our Guest Presenter at Millstreet Gramophone Circle on Friday, 21st August we had one of the biggest attendance for quite some time. In September the Presenter will be Con Kelleher of Cloghoulabeg.
And also on 21st August in the Wallis Arms Hotel Trevor O’Connor and Friends had superb success at the Friday Night Fever Event of the 70s and 80s in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation. We shall have a very colourful feature shortly on www.millstreet.ie of the excellent occasion which has realised impressive funds for such a worthy cause.
In the world of Athletic Sport we congratulate Michelle Finn who has been running in the semi-final of the 3000m Steeplechase at the World Championships in Beijing. Unfortunately she did not make the final, running well outside her best time. But, it’s an important experience on her way to the Olympics in Rio next year for which she has already qualified. Michelle’s mother, Mary is from Millstreet and runs with Millstreet Athletic Club.
Marking Matron Lena Kelleher’s recent retirement from St. Joseph’s Community Hospital, Millstreet a special Retirement Party to be held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday, 4th September beginning at 7pm is presently being organised.
