HICKEY-O’LEARY (Cullen Village, Mallow): On July 10, 2015, peacefully, in the exceptional care of Nuala and staff of Teach Altra Nursing Home, Newmarket, KATIE (nee Hickey) (ex Publican), dearly loved wife of the late Val and dear sister of the late Hannah Mary, Maria, Lizzie, Nora May, Julia, Willie, Denis, Peter and Tom, predeceased by her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Deeply regretted by her brothers Johnny, Martin and Paul, her nieces especially Ann (Murphy), Marie (Walsh), Maura (Neville) and their families, her nephews especially Conor Hickey and his family, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews, relatives and many friends.Reposing at Tarrant’s Funeral Home, Millstreet on this Saturday evening from 6pm with removal at 8pm to the Church of the Nativity, Cullen. Requiem Mass tomorrow, Sunday, at 10.15am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

In 1981 I took my family to Ireland for the 1st time. One Sunday dearly afternoon in early September we entered the village of Cullen and found our way to the public house of Katie Hickey. Katie welcomed us graciusley along with her brother and another customer from the village.
We traded family histories and sang to each other… an altogether wonderful time for us. Katie asked me to phone up her brother in Brooklyn, New York and to pass on her regards. Unfortunately, I was never able to contact her brother.
My children often speak of that beautiful day in the Irish Village of Cullen,remembering the warm welcome. My son Dan ( then 6 years old) having his first cigar and first Guiness at the bar.
Our prayers go out to Katie and to her family for those wonderful memories.

Hello Ed. Thanks so much for your lovely comments about my auntie Katie. I’m sure she entertained your family well and loved nothing more than to sing and dance and as you say trade family histories. Katie retired from the pub business in 2001 as her health was beginning to deteroriate with dementia. She always had great time for any “yanks” that called for a visit. Her brother that you met that day (uncle Willie) has also passed away and the other brother that you mentioned living in New York is alive, my uncle Martin. I am her brother Johnny’s daughter and I actually lived in part of the pub from 1995 to 2011 but moved to Boherbue (about 5 miles from Cullen) in 2011. So I am so glad you have fond memories of auntie Katie as we all do. She was a legend. May she rest in deserved peace. Ann Hickey Murphy

It is nice ( so Irish )of you to respond to my posting regarding your auntie Katie. Indeed she was a lovely person that I wish I had gotten to know more.
The thing that led me to the notice of her passing was really ironic.
Eleven years ago I submitted a DNA sample to Family Tree Maker to try to determine more of my ancestral history. Over the years there have been scores of notices of others that share ancestral DNA; but no one close in time. Upon receiving a new notice, with no connections I then rummaged thru old notices, one caught my eye because
it indicated DNA match with your aunt Katie. I said “My God, I met this woman 34 years ago” and didn’t know we shared some ancestral DNA. Does that mean you and I are somehow related.
I am 77 and happily married to my high school sweetheart. I hjave 4 children and 8 grandchildren and proud to say I’m “Irish”.

Of course you’re related and with Cullen being your surname, you have to be! That’s ironic about the DNA. Well I’m delighted you married your childhood sweetheart. I’m married to Jack Murphy and I have 3 children, Sean aged 17, Luke aged 13 and Edel aged 10. If you’re ever in Ireland again, look us up. We’re about 5 minutes from Cullen. My family and I were very warmly welcome at Katie’s. My fondest memories of our trip was just enjoying the opportunity to meet people who knew my great-grandfather Timothy Hickey. I have had the opportunity to complete a fair amount of family history and would be happy to share.
