It is with sadness that the Diocese of Leeds announces the death of Fr Jerry O’Mahony. Fr Jerry was born at Main Street, Millstreet, Co. Cork on 11th September 1934. He studied for the priesthood at All Hallows’ College, Dublin and was ordained on 22nd June 1958.
Arriving in England he was appointed Assistant Priest in St.Joseph’s, Bradford where he served for four years before he was appointed to serve in St. Joseph’s, Castleford. His curacy there lasted for six years and in 1966 he was transferred to St. Malachy’s, Halifax. Five years later he served his final curacy in St Peter’s, Doncaster. In October 1973 Fr Jerry became Parish Priest of Sacred Heart, Sowerby Bridge where he enjoyed thirteen years. Three years as Parish Priest of St. Edmund’s, Airedale (Castleford) followed before transferring to Holy Spirit, Heckmondwike where he served for five years until 1996.
His final parish was English Martyrs, Addingham where he was Parish Priest for sixteen years until his retirement in 2012.
Fr Jerry retired to the newly developed flats in the Manor House, Otley where he lived alongside several other retired priests until his recent illness.
The following arrangements have been made for his funeral.
Thursday 21st May, 7pm English Martyrs Church, Addingham. Reception of the body and Mass.
Friday 22nd May, 12 noon Leeds Cathedral. Requiem Mass celebrated by the Bishop.
Monday 25th May, 11am St Patrick’s Church, Mill Street Co. Cork. Requiem Mass followed by interment into the family grave.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral Church of St. Anne, Leeds on Friday, May 22 at 12 noon prior to repatriation for Mass in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mill Street, Co. IT was with deep sadness i heard of fr. o mahonys passing i have known fr since i was a child and he always called me mini he was a genuine person and did much good for people and no one ever knew he had done it i know that he is resting in the arms of jesus r.i.p fr o;mahony
Father Jerry O Mahony was quite a good man
And a good son to his parents Catherine and Dan
He died in England in distance far away
From Millstreet Town where he first saw light of day
In Millstreet Town in view of Clara in Seasons long gone
I did know his brothers Donie and Con
But since the mid eighties many changes in Millstreet since then
And the children of those times now middle aged women and men

A compassionate and kind person quite generous and in him nothing small
One who gave generously and in return did not expect to receive
That his passing is humanity’s loss one has to believe
Of years of life he did live quite a long span
And by all accounts he was a very good and holy man
To many he did prove himself a good friend
And sad to hear his life’s journey has come to an end
Eventually with the Reaper of lives we all have a date
But it is good people like Fr O Mahony who make humanity great

Fr Jerry was an exceptionally kind man with a great sense of humour. He was a great friend to my Uncle Bobby, Canon Robert Justice, also of Millstreet whilst he was also based in the Leeds dioceses. Fr Jerry was also an invaluable help to me and my family during my Uncle’s final years. A good man for sure.
