Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1248 from Millstreet.  Fondest Greetings dear readers and welcome to 2015.

The mild weather over the Christmas period saw to it that every planned event and function went ahead as planned. Our Church services were a joy and very well attended throughout in all three churches.  with a marked increase in the number of those attending confessions.

The Christmas Day Climb of Mushera Mountain drew great crowds. As did the New Years Day dip in the cold and swollen waters of the mighty Blackwater. All raising much needed funds for needy causes.

Because of the favourable weather, many people took to walking the developed and signposted treks on Clara Mountain and beyond, were enjoyed by a marked increase of people at Christmas time.

The fifth annual Little Womens Christmas Party organised by Mairead Daly was an outstanding success on Friday night last, and again raised money for those who are affected by cancer.

There are oceans of people to thank for our great Christmas: our Parish Priest Canon John, Fr.Paddy, and Fr Sean Tucker, and all connected with our Church over the Christmas.

Thanks to our hardworking Post Office Staff. The members of An Garda Siochana to name but a few.

And to Sean Radley for taking over for me for the last report of 2014 when I was not well.

Those who update our website year after year.

The list goes on and on.

Please be reminded that we have two defibilators in the town for public use. Organised and services by our Community Council. One is at the door of the Youth Centre and the second at the door of our Garda Barracks. It is in everybodys interest to familiarise themselves with them.

And still with the Youth Centre the good news is that the Community Council have plans for a sizable facelift for this important facility. Details will be announced later.

Following a wonderful Holy, Accident Free, Joyful Christmas we are ready for 2015.

Our shops and boutique have January Sales, and offering some real bargains.

Our lovely Aroma Café has reopened  beside Super Valu.

Just the place to drop in with a friend for a cuppa or nourishing meal.

But our Christmas isn’t  not over  until after tonight January 6th, when our Community singers with travel to the Pub in Carriganima to officially turn off the Christmas lights.

The Community singers  CD proved very popular over the Christmas period  both at  home and in places as far apart as Nebraska and Australia and many places in between. A few copies are still available, at €10 each, from Maura at the Siopa Deas and some shops in the town.

Copies of the 2015 Calendar, by the Community Council are also in the shops.

Lots of Cash was raised here  for Good Causes over the Holy Season … and there’s no time to stop: Already the Cullen and District Special needs Association are off to a flying start on Monday Jan 12th, and will help  you to lose weight and make money for their fund.  Please support them well.

Schools and work places are all up and running again this week, and will mean an upsurge in the volume of traffic in our roads. Buíochas le Dia we had an accident free Christmas, so keep up the good work and take care on our roads and work places, and farms.

It was great to see so many of our people making it home for Christmas. We sincerely hope they enjoyed their stay, and wish them a Happy and Successful New Year as they return to the many and varied places that they came from. Thankfully some came home to stay and many others planning to do likewise.

Our Weekly Lotto Draw resumes on this Sunday night January 11th. with a Jackpot of  €16,800.

It will be held at the Clara Inn.

From funds raised from new year’s Day swim on the Blackwater ,  “Arthritis Ireland” will be commencing  a six weeks  course  on Feb 15th and are looking for 20 local people  to take part .

Their notice goes as follows,

“Living Well with Arthritis” course. In two and a half hour evening sessions over six weeks in the parish centre, people learn more about their condition, share useful tips and experience and learn techniques to live with a chronic disease. Our three year evaluation showed that the course teaches people how to break the cycle of pain and take control of their condition. As a result, participants were doing more exercise, had increased knowledge of their condition and 25% of participants said they had less visits to their doctors. So BOOK NOW for a place on the course as places are limited, ring Margaret  Crean on 087 2212864.  The sponsorship cards are still open in various shops around the town.

Following the five-weeks closure of the Town Park to facilitate the Annual Coursing, the gates are now open to the public again to be used and enjoyed by all sections of our Community, thanks to the wonderful Committee who work so hard round the clock to maintain  it for us.

Eucharistic Adoration resumes both in Millstreet & Cullen Churches on Tuesday of next week January 13th.
