Genealogy: The O’Sullivans who owned Clara Mountain

Hi! My name is Richard Alexander Florczak III. I live in Hudson, Florida. My grandmother, Nora Maureen Florczak has family who lives in Millstreet, Ireland. Her maiden name is Sullivan. Her father (my great-grandfather) was Cornelius Sullivan. His family were once one of the most wealthiest families in Millstreet.

The head of the family was Daniel Sullivan (my 2nd great grandfather). His wife (2nd great grandmother) was Mary Cronin. I don’t know how many children they had. But I know a little bit about the family. My great grandfather (Daniel and Mary’s son) was Cornelius Sullivan. He went by Con to his friends. He owned a mountain called Clara Mountain. His family owned thousands of acres. One of his sisters was mentally challenged and was taken care of by the Cloistered. Cornelius gave all of his land and the Clara Mountain to the Cloistered nuns, due to them taken care of his sister all of her adult life. I know two more children and that is it. One of Con’s brothers were Jeremiah Sullivan. He was born in Millstreet, Co. Cork, Ireland. One of Con’s sisters was Johana Sullivan. She was born in 1925. She became a nun when she came to the United States. She died in 1975.

My Father’s parents emigrated from County Cork (Millstreet) in 1895. Grandpa was Cornelius O’Sullivan and grandmother was either a Lenahan or an O’Leary. They wed in Manhattan in 1898.

My Mother’s forebears were Eagan and Devanney out of Mayo. Mother’s mother’s father was Mike Devanney. I’m estimating that they left Mayo prior to 1890. U.S Immigration truncated O’Sullivan so I was born a “Sullivan”, subsequently marrying an Irish-Welsh descendant named Parry.

I actually don’t know where the lands are. That’s what I was wondering if you could help me with.

Please help me. I would like to know if someone can send me information about my family.
Sincerely,
Richard Alexander Florczak III

from Michael (admin for millstreet.ie):
The above is gathered from a number of emails that Richard and I have exchanged. We have discovered  a little more information:

  • from page 21 of the Cork Landowners of 1872 (published by the Aubane Historical Society), there’s a Daniel O’Sullivan with 4,274 acres of land in Cork (but it doesn’t say where), but with an address of Sidney Place, Cork. It’s most likely the same man mentioned above.
  • Cornelius Sullivan was born on October 18, 1905
  • The Census of 1911 has the family living in Inchigeela: (see census details)

If anyone has further details on the family, please leave the details in the comment form below. Or, if you know a thing or two about the ownership of Clara, or which Cloistered nuns are mentioned, please let us know.

  1. I have found more information. I have a nickname of Cornelius’ father. His nickname was Denny Darby. His real name was Denis O’Sullivan.I misinterpreted what my grandmother said. My great granfather Cornelius gave a lot of money to the Cloistered nuns for taking care of his sister. Corenlius’ family was from Spain and that’s all I have.

(added later) Also, yhe person who sponsored Cornelius Sullivan (my great grandfather) was his aunt Mary Sullivan, who happened to live in New York.

Admin’s note: there is a reference to a jeremiah o’sullivan aka “Jer Denny Darby” on page 14 of “the Boys of the Millstreet Batallion Area” (download at: aubanehistoricalsociety.org/aubane_collection/battalion.pdf). he’s more than likely the son of Denny Darby.

    1. Hi Richard, My name is Nancy Ruby and I live in AZ originally from Boston with cousins in NY. I would like to compare information with you. I have family in Millstreet, named O’Sullivan that still have a farm at the base of Clara Mountain. My great-great grandfather was named Daniel O’Sullivan, but the dates are much earlier than what I read above.

    2. Hi Richard
My birth name is Deirdre O Donoghue
My great grandfather was John Donoghue married Hannah Sullivan born 1890 from the Millstreet area
Hannah had two brothers who fought in WW1 including one called Daniel who trained wild horses for the Calvary in Canada
Her younger sister Nora went into a Convent and there was another sister who married someone called Cronin
Hannah’s parents both died young possibly from tb , leaving the children to fend for themselves …..
Some of your info correlate’s with mine and I’m curious
My mother always told me that my great granmother Hannah came from a wealthy family

      1. My 2nd great grandparents were Denis J Sullivan and Margaret Cronin. Denis’s parents were Jeremiah Sullivan and Johanna Moynihan.

  2. I remember Jerh “Denny Darby” O’Sullivan. He lived in Lackadiota, Millstreet, Co. Cork. wiith his sister Margaret.. Jerh was married, but his wife died long before him. His sister Margaret was not married. This was in the fifties.
He had a brother,Con in the U.S., who was married to Nell Casey from Millstreet. There are not any of the family in Lackadota now. Any living relatives would be Cons family in the U.S.

I hope this will be of some use to you,
You can email me if you have more enquiries. <email>

  4. Hi, Richard. I don’t really have information to provide, but I thought it quite an interesting read, especially since I am a Sullivan and have actually hiked Clara Mountain with a friend named Denis, from Millstreet, Cork. …. and I’m from Land O’ Lakes… right down the road from you. Crazy how small our world really is. Good luck in your genealogy search. I have been to Ireland five times hunting down my ancestors, but have yet to find actual documentation or blood relatives. I’m having fun, though. And have made many great friends along the way.
    Blessings,
    Cathleen

  5. Richard,

    I contacted you in 2016.

How wonderful that would be ,
    take care in your search,
    Theresa

  6. I had Sullivan ancestors that lived in Millstreet around 1760 or so. Daniel Sullivan married a Catherine Bohily around 1755 maybe. She was born in 1735 in Millstreet, I saw on ancestry.com
