On this day January 6th, 1919 – A day after 3rd West Cork Brigade was formed, the 2nd North Cork Brigade IRA was born. Liam Lynch was appointed Brigade Commandant. The brigade’s 7 battalions were: Fermoy 1st; Mallow 2nd; Castletownroche 3rd; Charville 4th; Newmarket 5th; Kanturk 6th; & Millstreet 7th.
The Companies in the Millstreet 7th battalion were:- Millstreet, Rathduane, Cullen, Drishane, Dooneen, Rathcoole, Derrynagree, Kilcorney, Mushera.
The usual training went on at this time and there was occasionally a little target practice with .22 rifle when the ammunition could be procured. About this time, the various companies in the battalion occasionally assembled on Sunday evenings for combined exercises – moving across country in extended order, scouting. Units were often called out at night and sent on cross country exercises. [1]

Vice O/C – Denis O’Brien;
Adjutant Jerh,Crowley;
Q/M – Denis Galvin;
The officers of the new brigade were:
O/C – Liam Lynch (Fermoy);
Vice O/C – Dan Hegarty, Mallow;
Adjuant – Tom Barry, Glanworth;
Q/M – George Power, Fermoy

Recently I received a query about a Liam/William/Bill O Brien who is mentioned on the Rep. monument in Newmarket. It seems he was killed in or near Tipp Town. I’ve no data on him. Could you please enlighten me about him – or point me in the direction of finding it.

Does any one have any information on a Fermoy volunteer called Michael Joseph Casey from Clancy Street, Fermoy? He was arrested by the Brits in June 1920 for cutting the telegraph wires and raising the tricolour in the Square, Fermoy, and subsequently imprisoned on Spike Island.

When I was growing up a long time ago in Mallow,Co.Cork, I was aware of the Hegarty Family and especially Dan Hegarty they owned a shop and a Saw Mills little did I or anyone know at the time the significant role played by so many and especially Dan Hegarty
Dan was Vice O/C of the Mallow Battalion and as September 2020 is the Anniversary of the Capture
of Mallow Barracks and the resulting Reprisals that happened on 28 September 1920 we wish to remember them,
My understanding is that Dan Hegarty was from Glanworth,Co.Cork and we would also like to know what cemetery he was laid to rest in,
