Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1174 From Millstreet.  Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this mild and damp,Tuesday morning  of our Festival Week here in Millstreet.

Starting on Thursday July 4th Independence Day, The full list of activities are written bold and plain the  former McCarthy’s TV Window in the Town Square. Check it every time you pass and keep up with the events.

It’s a week of many firsts. The blessing of the new Cross on Clara by our Canon  John FitzGerald.  The re-opening of our newly refurbished Museum /Tourist Office,in the Carnegie Hall.  The turning of the sod for the  Astro Turf on our newly extended sports complex.

Organised by the Community Council.

To recap, on Thursday we have the Blessing of the Cross on Clara. All walkers please register at the pastoral Centre for a six o clock start, and check in again on your return. This is very important so that everybody will be accounted for.

For the Children,there’s a Teddy Bears picnic in the Town Park that day at 4. and a Gala Table Quiz at the Wallis Arms Hotel that night at 9.Organised by the Active Retired Group.

On Friday , There’s a Treasure Hunt in the Town Park at 3pm.

At 6 the Millstreet Athletic Club have organised the Willie Neenan Memorial Run,starting from the GAA Hall.

Later that night A music extravaganza at the Wallis Arms Hotel featuring the popular Natural Gas.

Saturday July 6th is truly Action Packed

The long-awaited turning of the first sod for the Astro Turf in the Town Park at 11 am. The honours being done by our Canon John FitzGerald.

The Artisan Food & Craft Fair going on from 10 until 4 in the Square Featuring the Best of Millstreet food and food products ,There’s a Kiddies Section where children and young people are invited to take part in cooking and presenting local foods. There are prizes for the best Suggested items – Surplus vegetables, salads, fruits, jams, home baking, knitting, jewellery, crafts & plants.

Our Country Markets which were so popular in the past will be re-enacted on the day,as well as Farmers Market.

Aside of that there will be places where crafts of all kinds will be welcome.

Walking Festival starts out from the Wallis Arms on Saturday at 12noon.
Our FC Gathering Blitz in the Town Park also at noon. Gaa Fun Day at the same venue at 6.

Vintage Show & shine in the Square at 6pm.

Millstreet Golf Classic in Kanturk at 11.30

Busking Competition in the Main Street starts at 8 and Pub Trail from 8 till late.

On Sunday July 7th Kanturk Cycle Club Cycle Race starts from the GAA Hall at 12noon.

Autotesting Championships at K & L from 11am.  Followed by Ancient Way-Historic Trails from Fairfield Car Park at 2pm.

And an exciting Soap Box race in the Town square at  5PM on Sunday .Dont miss it.Some classic inventions expected

Followed by Busking Competition at 8pm.

The months of hard work and careful planning by all our voluntary groups , in honour of the Nationwide Gathering, are about to reach fruition this week from Thursday to Sunday, please do your part and support them .You can help out in many ways, take part, Spread the word that Millstreet is the place to be, for the best of locally produced food ,for the best services, and the best of good enjoyment

Be sure that you know whats on at all times so that you can inform others.

Our Tidy Towns Group can justly take a bow for having our town and approach roads looking so neat and colourful on time for our Gathering Festival. The trim Margins  on the Drishane road have come in for special mention. Many thanks to all who are making the effort.

The Lotto Jackpot was not won at Tarrants on Sunday night and the draw will be held at the Bush Bar on next Sunday night with a Jackpot of €2,400.

Music at the Pub in Carriginma this Saturday night by the ever populat two Mikes.

Community Council Meeting at the Wallis Arms Hotel to-night at nine. Topics are to finalise the arrangements both the Blessing of the Cross on Clara and the latest on the Astro Turf.. All members please attend.

Coffee Morning in aid of The Church Restoration and Cope Mallow at the GAA Hall this Thursday . Please support it well.

A note from Breda at the Library to say they have Summer workshops every Wednesday in July from 3 to 4 pm .

She will also tell you about the Summer Reading Challenge. Have a book Will Travel, and the prizes that are to be won.

Millstreet hosted the Cork GAA Clubs Draw at Colemans Showrooms last Thursday night.

On the field, Millstreet overcame Banteer in the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship

On this Saturday, Millstreet play St. Marks in the Duhallow Under 21 Hurling Championship in Meelin at 7.30pm
