Historic 1927 Ticket…Fundraising for Church

We thank Teresa Murphy of West End, Millstreet for this very interesting 1927 ticket relating to a Social and Dance in New York in aid of St. Patrick’s Church in Millstreet. One of the Organising Committee Members was Peggy Corcoran – an aunt of Teresa and her sister, Eileen. (S.R.)

And on the reverse side of the ticket ….. the words of “Are You Lonesome Tonight?!”

Very cool. Another of the committee members, Bill Reardon, was my Grandfather and the father of your former colleague, Michele. I believe we have one of these tickets at home somewhere also – small world!

Murphy’s Hall was set up and run by some members of a Murphy family who had emigrated from Millstreet, as far as I know. They had originally lived about two miles west of Millstreet on the Clara Road. The Hall was a great social venue for the Irish, especially those from Cork and most especially the Millstreet emigrants. I remember hearing this in the 1950s from my mother whose maiden name was Katie Corcoran and was a sister to the Peggy listed in the committee. I believe that most if not all the members of the committee were from the Millstreet area.

Many thanks Eugene, Cathal and Con for your uplifting and very interesting comments on the truly historic 1927 ticket. I also discovered today from Mary Cronin of Main Street that many Millstreet people used to stay in a house owned by Miss Abina Moynihan in New York. Abina originally came from a house in Main Street, Millstreet and had emigrated to New York where having worked in a wealthy house did very well through hard work and wise use of her earnings. Local people felt so very fortunate to be able to avail of accommodation when they first emigrated, in a house owned by a Millstreet native. From the ticket we note that Abina was another dedicated Committee Member of the Organising Group. We are very grateful to Mary whose knowledge of Millstreet is so very accurate and hugely impressive.
