The Dancing Principal

A big congratulations to Presentation National School student Tia Kiely who has won a prize in the poetry category in the Listowel Writer’s Week Festival. Tia and her family will be attending a prize-giving ceremony at the end of the month and President Michael D. Higgins will be the special guest at this ceremony. Below is Tia with her poem:

The Dancing Principal

We have a dancing principal in our school
We all think she’s awesome and real cool
Once she said we will have a show and tell
And then she rang the big school bell
We all gathered round to show our stuff
But the principal began to strut

First she began to sway
And shouted isn’t this a fantastic day
I told her she was very good at prancing
And she should enter Strictly Come Dancing
We all looked from one to the other
And couldn’t wait to tell our mothers

She split us into little groups
Now she said I have my dancing troops
She made us all do the three hand reel
And everyone ended up on their heels
Next on the list was the Siege of Ennis
Then she said I think we will take this tour to Venice

Rumba, samba, jigs and tap
Then we all began to clap
She really is the dancing queen
The best my class has ever seen
Everyday at break time now
She has us dancing to a crowd
Of people passing by the school
Now they think we are really cool

    1. Hi Tia,
Well done on your award. In case you don’t know, on the Listowel Writers’ Week Facebook page, they have just today put up photos of all the winners of the competitions and some of the opening night with President Higgins.

I was lucky enough to be there as a guest of one of the other prizewinners, my first cousin won a Short Story competition. In that Facebook page, you are in photos numbered 14 & 35 in an album called “Winners of our 2012 Competitions”. You look lovely in your red and white outfit – keeping the Cork colours! Congratulations again
