Hello, i live in Australia and I am researching the life of Dr Barry Cotter who was the first doctor in Melbourne. He was born at Flintfield House around 1807. I wonder if anyone in Millstreet can advise me of where I may be able to obtain further information about him.

An aunt of Barry Cotter? Rickard Deasy (b c1766 – d30 Aug 1853) founder of a brewery in Clonakilty with a Mr Stewart, father of Rev, Henry Stewart. Married Mary Anne Cotter (b1779, d 29 Mar 1853) of Flintfield Millstreet on 8 Sep 1802. Moved to Jersey in about 1837-1840 owing to financial difficulty, where he died in 1853. [1]

Hi Moira, there’s a piece about him and his family in a book called “A Millstreet Miscellany (3)” which was done by the Aubane Historical Society. I would suggest that you contact Jack Lane from the Aubane Historical Society ( <email> ), as he would surely know more, since he researched his family in order to write the piece.

… but i see he was involved in the first recorded duel in Melbourne. Very impressive. A bit of a pioneer by all regards.

Thanks Michael for posting this, Yes he certainly was an interesting character–duels, shipwrecks, a fortune made and lost and fond of the drop. There are lots of snippets of information floating around and my aim is to collate them into a biography. His wife, Inez Seville Fitzgerald was even more interesting, being the illegitimate daughter of an Irish peer Edward Fox Fitzgerald (son of the (wait for it)famous Irish revolutionary Lord Edward Fitzgerald who died in Dublin castle at the hands of the British in 1798….I could go on and on!!

There are a dozen or so Cotter households in the wider Millstreet area, but I don’t know if any of them are related to the Cotters in question.
