Dear friends in Millstreet, I wanted to share with you the news of my father Ross McCarthy’s passing at age 88 here in New York. His grandfather (Eugene) and grandmother (Mary Moynahan) were born in the Millstreet area. Ross Edwin McCarthy, 88, passed away in the early morning of Monday, September 12, 2011 in Geneva General Hospital. There will be no prior calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held at the Bailey Funeral Home, Wallingford, CT in October. Memorial contributions, in his memory, may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Ross was born in Clifton Springs, NY on June 10, 1923 to Ross and Gladys Robinson McCarthy. He was a graduate of Phelps High School and Hartwick College. Ross received his Masters in Social Work from State University of New York at Buffalo where he met his wife of 40 years, Barbara Lee Kaiser of Brooklyn. Ross was a longtime resident of Wallingford, CT, and served others throughout his working life as a psychiatric social worker. Ross volunteered to join the US Army during World War 11 where he served on a mortar crew in the Pacific and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Ross will be remembered for his kind, intelligent, and humorous spirit, as well as his love for his family and friends, baseball especially the St. Louis Cardinals, basketball, especially the U Conn Huskies, politics, bridge and his pets.
Surviving is his son: Robert (Nina) McCarthy of Geneva; his daughter: Christine (Peter) McMorris of West Hartford, CT; five treasured grandchildren: Daniel (Dana) McCarthy; Katelin McCarthy, Caroline McCarthy, Lauren Elmore and Devlin McMorris.
He was predeceased by his wife: Barbara and his sister: Alice Linehan of Clifton Springs.
