Goals win games and it was certainly the case today as Goleen scored goals at crucial times to proceed to the quarter final of the Junior B Football County Championship. The first half was tit-for-tat as both sides knocked over some nice points, but both sides were guilty of a number of missed opportunities also. St.Johns were better and faster on the ball, moving it quickly for some fine scores, yet were playing too much of the game out the field and not getting close to the goal often enough. Goleen seemed stronger around the middle of the field and caused lots of problems when they ran directly at the St.Johns defence. It was an entertaining first half with Johns leading 0-5 to 0-4 at the break, and all to play for in the second half.
St. Johns started the second half well adding on another couple of points before Goleen goaled after 15 minutes, when an overlap left them with a man inside who finished clinically. Goleen added a few long range points, but then St.Johns had to push, and scored a couple of more points to reduce the margin to one point with 5 minutes left, but in pushing forward and visibly tiring they were exposed at the back and Goleen punished them with 2-2 in quick succession to finish any hopes of a comeback.
A great effort, but they will rue the two disallowed goals, one in the first half and the second just after Goleens first goal both for square balls.
