Rev. Michael J. Carroll (1943 – 2011)

Passed away on May 26, 2011, at the age of 67. Fr. Carroll was born in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland, on July 6, 1943, to Timothy and Julia Carroll. He attended All Hallows College Seminary in Dublin and was ordained on June 18, 1967, for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

His first parish assignment began at St. Anselm Catholic Church in Los Angeles where he served as Associate Pastor. As his priestly journey continued, he served in many parishes and schools throughout the archdiocese including St. Michael High School (Educator), St. Brendan, St. John the Baptist de la Salle, and St. Luke the Evangelist (Associate Pastor). He also served as Chaplain at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach from 1982 to 1993 ministering to the sick and dying. In 2000, he became Pastor at St. Lorenzo Ruiz in Walnut. From there he served at St. Mary Magdalen, Blessed Junipero Serra, and most recently, St. Maximilian Kolbe as Administrator Pro Tem, and St. Julie Billiart as Senior Priest.

Through his ministry, Fr. Carroll touched many people’s lives. He was a beloved priest, mentor, brother, and friend. His passion for the Lord knew no bounds. He was exuberant in love for the Church and for the people he served. He was committed to spreading the Gospel in thought, word, and deed. He connected to people on all levels and believed we are all holy people in the eyes of God. He had a terrific sense of humor and shared several Irish stories during his homilies. Fr. Michael Carroll will be truly missed in our community of faith, but he will never be forgotten. We will carry his spirit, joy and the love of Jesus Christ with us always.

It could be said that he was “one of a kind,” but hopefully he is not “one of a kind” because the world needs more Father Carrolls. We need good people that work everyday to make the world a better place. We need people that can give us a sense of what heaven will be and Father Carroll did that. Our lives may be a bit dim without him but if you look at the night sky I think you’ll see it’s a bit brighter with the addition of his star.

Fr. Carroll is survived by his brother, Bishop Timothy Joseph Carroll SMA; his sisters, Margaret O’Doherty and Mary Fennessy; and many nieces and nephews who reside in Ireland. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 3, at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 2475 Borchard Road, Newbury Park, CA 91320-3258, (805)498-3602. Internment will take place at a later date in Ireland.

Condolences may be sent to: Most Reverend Timothy Joseph Carroll, SMA and the Carroll Family, c/o St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 2475 Borchard Road, Newbury Park, CA 91320-3258. Arrangements made with the assistance of Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, Thousand Oaks.
