Our wonderfully active Millstreet Tidy Towns Committee are continuing to further enhance the appearance of our area with recent painting projects at Drishane Road truly having an uplifting effect on the eastern approach to the town.   Members of the local Macra have assisted in this work and even more people are very much encouraged to assist in the weekly clean-up programmes.   This year there is an added anti-litter competition for local estates.   This year’s chosen three estates includes Murphy’s Terrace which is being judged between 28th May and 8th June.   McCarthy’s Terrace on Clara Road is being judged between 9th and 22nd June.   Tanyard Wood Estate is being judged between 23rd June and 6th July.   Very special thanks is due to Joe Fitzgerald, David Brosnan & Staff of Supervalu, Millstreet for the superbly generous presentation of 1,500 plants which will so magnificently add such colour throughout Millstreet during the bright days of Summer.

Millstreet Macra’s recent Concert in aid of Marymount Hospice held at the Wallis Arms was a great success.   James Kelleher, one of the main co-ordinators paid special tribute and extended thanks to all who helped in the praiseworthy project.

Transition Year Students were presented with very special certificates on last Thursday night in Millstreet Community School marking their very many successful achievements throughout the year and we got an opportunity to view just a selection of their magnificently creative projects and to hear their very talented musical ability.    It was Deputy Áine Collins, T.D. who presented the Certs. And who gave the keynote address.   On the next day at UCC Áine spoke and shook hands with Queen Elizabeth.   The spontaneous and sincere applause experienced in Patrick Street in Cork on that day as people viewed the leaving of the Royal Party from Cork Airport as shown on giant screens on the streets of Cork, was indeed most memorable and now on record for the archives.

The Cullen Young at Heart outing to Darby O’Gill’s, Killarney takes place on Thursday, 30th June.   Enquiries not later than Thursday, 16th June.  Full details on www.millstreet.ie .

In the Sporting World we note that Niall Kelleher from the parish of Millstreet is in charge of the Cork Junior Team 2011 and we also note the “Irish Examiner” report which accorded much praise on “the dynamic Kevin Crowley from Millstreet who sparkled at right half-back I” n the Munster Minor semi-final against Clare where the Cork side won by 1-16 to 0-6.

Millstreet Country Park has scheduled a Guided Walk for this coming Sunday 29thMay 2011. This walk will commence at 11.00a.m. and is suitable for Category C Walkers.   It’s a guided walk and only €5 per participant with no other additional fees or admission charges applying to participants.

And, finally, a thought on which to ponder:  “The curve that can set a lot of things straight is a smile.”

For c103, deputising for Eily Buckley, this is Seán Radley in Millstreet wishing you pleasant listening and until, le cunamh Dé, an tseachtain seo chugainn, beannacht Dé is go dté sibh slán!
