St. Bridget’s Cross Workshop at Millstreet Library

Some of the many enthusiastic participants who attended the annual St. Bridget's Cross Workshop at Millstreet Library on Friday, 28th Jan. 2011 from 3 to 4 p.m..

Co-ordinated by Breda O’Leary, Librarian, Millstreet Library the annual St. Bridget’s Cross Workshop was an outstanding success with expert instructors Breeda Kelleher, Teresa Kelleher and Kitty Cronin kindly sharing their skills in the making of the traditional Crosses.   Here we view a selection of images illustrating the important event.   St. Bridget’s Day is on Tuesday, 1st February 2011.   On the eve of the day it is a special custom to leave out a handkerchief or cloth outside one’s home where, it is believed, St. Bridget blesses the cloth as her spirit passes over Ireland that night.    The cloth is then believed to have a healing effect of those believers who rub it to where a person may be experiencing pain.
