And amongst the Irish Community east of Melbourne they are a well known pair
Kind hearted and good people and surely nice to know

Some photos taken at Drishane Cemetery this January

Hello, I am looking for any info on the Mitchells of Millstreet circa 1830-60s. I know that there were 2 brothers Michael Patrick and Dennis. I believe Dennis was born around 1838 and Michael around 1842. I was wandering if someone could possibly tell me how many Catholic parishes there were in the area at that time? I would like to see if they have any records of the Mitchells.
Thank you for your help, John Burgess email:<email>

Cockhill’s Hannie Murphy is at rest to day
Her remains in Drishane not far from the Finnow lay
Perhaps she is playing cards in Heaven from Earth far away
In forty drives with Millstreet’s best card players she did hold sway
A wonderful person as i do recall

The Southern Star this week carries an article on the Carbery Football of the 1970s at the West Cork GAA awards. the Millstreet team are highly praised as fine adversaries :

… Millstreet were probably the strongest club team in the county with a handful of county players like the great Dinny Long, Humphrey Kelleher, John Coleman and Connie Hartnett and they fought some great battles with Carbery.

Who will ever forget the clash between Donal Hunt and Humphrey Kelleher in Macroom. Two iron men, neither backing down from the challenge, we can still hear the thump. Of course, those were the days when referees allowed the physical in football and there was a definite place for tough men. The pity was that such a fine Millstreet team never got to win the county …

The strong boy of the class room as i do recall
He later became a legend of Gaelic Football
In Cork’s All Ireland nineteen seventy three winning team the stalwart full back
In his prime Humphrey Kelleher was a hard nut to crack

Full of the joys of life and of youthful elan
And what a great character he grew into be

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news  report 1048 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and  I wish you all the very best on this dull but calm and pleasant  Tuesday morning.

A million congratulations to Timmy Lehane from Aubane, who won the All-Ireland Final Of the  Novice Seniors Boxing Championship at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday night at 64 Kgs.

Dean Desmond at 81 Kg competed as well and won the Semi Final on Friday night but sadly was beaten by one point in the Final on Saturday night.

So well done to them and to all concerned with then.

The Farm Machinery Show which was held at the Green Glens for three days last week drew large crowds from near and far. The amount of exhibits on display was well up on former years, and the fact that it was opened until 10.30 each night gave every body a chance to come and see.

On Friday night last the people of Ballydaly revelled in the glories of their involvement with the GAA over the past 60 years. Over two hundred and twenty avid fans enjoyed a beautiful meal at the Wallis Arms Hotel and this was followed by Presentations, reminiscing and a joyful event all round. Margaret Murphy (O’Brien) recited wonderful poems recalling past glories. Their big night was recorded on film for posterity and was eagerly admired several times since. We wish them every success for the future.
