If you’re Irish and in Melbourne and live up the Preston way
Give a call on Johnny Tarrant it will help to make his day
And he’ll give you a huge welcome as he has a heart of gold
That great man from Gortavehy a few with two score years old.
.
He’s worked hard throughout Australia for fifteen long years or more
And he’s still the same John Tarrant as I knew in days of yore
He still speaks with Irish accent and he hasn’t changed one bit
And at heart he’s still a youngster with a mighty sense of wit.

On Monday evening we travelled to the Shearwater Carlton Hotel, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway to attend a superb Concert/Dance presented by the renowned Big Tom McBride and the Mainliners Showband. Ita and William Fitzgerald have long been wonderfully loyal fans of the Band and, like many other true followers, have attended Big Tom Dances at various venues throughout Ireland. Undoubtedly, Big Tom is the undisputed King of Country & Western Music here in Ireland and in an interview we recorded for LTV2 almost two years ago, the great man recalled with joy appearing in the famous “Star” Ballroom in Millstreet in the Showband days. We were also blessed to meet with [read more …] “Millstreet at Big Tom Experience in Ballinasloe – 27th Dec. 2010”
Now that the ice has melted and the burst water pipes have exposing themselves by flooding all around them, water shortages have become an issue. Following problems in themany areas yesterday Cork County Council have released the following details for Millstreet:
While the situation is improving in many areas, there are still severe problems which are being worked on by council staff. Consumers are again asked to use water sparingly and property owners and key holders should check for leaks in unoccupied premises and shut off the water if necessary.
Reservoir level has recovered somewhat but are still low in Millstreet – further nightly interruptions can be expected. Laugt and Caherbarnagh reservoirs are empty and severe disruptions will continue today.
Thanks to Brian Kiely for sending in photos of the snow and ice on Christmas Morning from the frozen over Blackwater and also on top of Clara. All the photos are below. [read more …] “Christmas Morning photos”

The wonder of it only does seem to grow
Sean Radley’s amazing images of Millstreet in snow
Though hardly the place for to go to for to improve your suntan
It is thanks for the great pics to the talented man
Though the images on screen beautiful to behold
The very thought of it leaves me feeling cold
The harsh winds of Winter with the breath of chill
Blowing through the old Town in view of Clara Hill [read more …] “Seán Radley’s Amazing Images”
As we approach the end of 2010 Ireland is a dark place. Very many people are fearful, anxious, worried and very concerned about their jobs, their homes and their children’s future.
The message of Christmas is a message of hope but it must be painful even to hear or speak the word ‘hope’ for people who feel stressed, disillusioned and possibly on the verge of despair. For people in that situation hoping for better things must look like wishful thinking.
But we must not despair. We must not give up. We must not cease to hope. We cannot live without hope. [read more …] “Bishop Bill Murphy Christmas Blessing”

Someone has posted a number of very nice photos of the snow and ice scenery at Drishane Bridge on Flickr. Even a few photos of some well known locals walking on the Blackwater … which is not the safest of things to do at the best of times, but all the same they’re still with us thankfully :).
Still, some very nice photos in the set, especially the ones at dusk.

Unfortunately, due to the icy conditions, our Carol service had to be cancelled on the 19th December. However the Methodist community in Millstreet would like to wish everyone in Millstreet a very Happy Christmas.
Just after Christmas Rev. Laurence Graham, the Methodist minister in Killarney who also oversees the work in Millstreet, will lead a team of seventeen people to Haiti for almost three weeks. They will join with sisters and brothers from the Methodist Church in Haiti to work on a building project. Some medical personnel on the team will be helping at three different Church based medical clinics in rural areas. We also hope to run activities in a Church run orphanage which is next door to our building project. Please pray for the team, for safe travel and a productive visit.
Methodist meetings continue on the second and fourth Sundays of each month so for January that is the 9th and 23rd. We meet at 7.00 p. m. in the Canon O’Donovan Centre on Clara Road.
