This Saturday Ann-Marie McCarthy launches a book entitled “Of Constant Heart – Conversations with wise Women in Ireland“.

Amongst the wise women in the book is our own Eily Buckley (who does the Regional Report every week). Here is a a short extract from her conversation with Ann-Marie in the book:

I’ll tell you… one beautiful day, I can still feel the warm sun on my face, Dan and myself were coming away down the road, linking arms after putting the cows away. We met a school bus going up the byroad. The inspector stopped and asked us something about route or roads or something. As it sailed away down the road from us, Dan said, “That is something you could do. You could drive a bus.”  I said, “I could never do that.” “You could,” he said. “You have plenty of experience driving the tractor around the land and driving the car and all the rest of it.”  So, I applied for the job and got it. I trained for three or four weeks then took my test and passed it. I was driving a bus the following Monday morning. That opened another big life for me. But that was Dan the whole time … <read the full extract>

At the book-launch this coming Saturday Eily will host a conversational workshop from 2:00-3:45pm with topics that will be finalised with the participants on the day. Later at 4pm she will be in a Wisdom Council that will discuss passing wisdom to future generations. continue reading…

On Saturday, 25th September 2010 a very special Harvest Mass was celebrated in Cullen Church. It also marked the final Saturday evening Mass in Cullen because of the new Mass time schedule coming into effect this weekend in Millstreet Parish. Here we see some of the very talented musicians from Cullen N.S. who enhanced the overall ceremony in a superb manner. Refreshments and music at Cullen Community Centre followed the Mass. The occasion was recorded by William Fitzgerald. (Seán)

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news Report 1032 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this calm and wet, Tuesday morning, the last one in September.

This was  very sad week in Millstreet when the remains of 54 yr old Tadgh Moynihan were brought home to his native Millstreet, all the way from Australia where he met an accidental death over a week ago. He was widely revered in Australia and again when his body lay in repose at Tarrants funeral home .The procession of sympathisers when on for many hours. And the Parish Church was full to capacity for the requiem Mass which was concelebrated by seven priests.   A private Mass for the Family was said at the funeral home on Sunday and becuse for Tagdy’s love for Sport, the Sam Maguire Cup was brought for that occasion. He will be so sadly missed. On behalf of our community I want to extend our deepest sympathy to his Family. And may the lovely Tadgh, Rest in Peace.

On a lighter note I want to congratulate Noel C Duggan on succeeding in his efforts to remove sanctions imposed by the SJI on competitors who took part in Millstreet Summer Horse Show this year. It was not an easy task, but he took them on and won. Well done to himself and his family. See our Website for more details.

Jack Lane had written an article on Earl Spencer’s visit of 1884 which puts into question validity of the article written by the Irish Times (as added her last weekend). He has kindly allowed us to publish it on millstreet.ie.

The nationalist and Land League leader, William O’Brien M.P., used to refer to the Irish Times as the “Liarish Times.” He had good reason to do so as it was an inveterate opponent of national independence and the land struggle and consistently distorted and denigrated the aims and activities of both movements.

A classic example of this was its report of the visit of the Lord Lieutenant, Earl Spencer, to Millstreet on 7 September 1884. The Earl was an ancestor of Lady Diana. He unexpectedly visited the town and was accompanied by mounted and armed Hussars. The town had developed a reputation as a hotbed in the land war but this was only because the activities of the Land League had been highlighted by the local Parish Priest who uniquely among his peers was an inveterate opponent and used the media and the Unionist media in particular to promote his opposition over a number of years. He was articulate and well connected and also participated in various Government commissions to further his views. Millstreet was not much different from elsewhere but his media outpourings made it appear so and it gained a reputation for what was called lawlessness and the Irish Times report, naturally enough, lays this on with a trowel which continue reading…

Tadgh Moynihan’s life ended in Australia in a tragic way
And back home in Millstreet his last remains lay
Perhaps in his fifties luck not on his side
In an accident it has been reported he died.
.
As a young man for Ballydaly his home club gaelic football he played
And all around Duhallow many friendships he forged and made
His family and friends for him left to shoulder grief’s cross
His friendship to those who knew and loved him an irreplaceable loss.

ALL WELCOME

There was good news for Millstreet Horse Show this week as Show Jumping Association of Ireland (SJI) members proposed and passed a motion to cancel all fines and suspensions arising from member who jumped at the horse show last August.

The SJI and Green Glens have been in a protracted dispute centering on the issue of insurance. This came to a head in August when the Corkman staged what he termed an ‘independent’ show, with many SJI members and officials defying the threat of sanction to participate. In turn, the SJI rescheduled its national championships to run opposite Millstreet, arguably the country’s most popular show, and the organisation is in … continue reading…

Rathmore Fair & Family Day took place on Sunday, 26th Sept. 2010.  It was a very colourful, busy and cheerful occasion with lots of music, buying and selling, a fancy dress parade and much more.  We thank Michael O’Mahony of Rathmore for alerting us to the event which has also been recorded briefly by LTV2 Millstreet.   (Seán)

26/Sept/2010 – Both teams were slow to get going in the first half and it took until the 25th min for the first half chance. A corner broke to Brian Murphy but his shot struck Tadhg Collins on the way and was cleared. At the other end Waterloo had a couple of half chances as well but the defence and keeper dealt with them well. The second half started much the same but we began to find a bit more space after the first 20 mins. Paul Dawson and Chris Cleary had chances but we had to wait until the 75th min to take the lead. Dawson played a ball through for Collins who got around his man on the end line and squared it continue reading…
