The Secret Garden – July Events

from the Secret Garden

What an amazing summer so far, almost makes up for the winter! We hope that you are making the most of your garden and enjoying the fruits of your labour.   Although this is a quiet time in the garden, remember to water, weed & feed. Keep deadheading roses and annuals to keep plants flowering for longer. This is also a good time to sow vegetable seeds for quick croping plants (beetroot, radish, salads, scallions, carrots, french beans) as well as winter-hardy crops such as kale, cabbage and winter lettuce.   We have three events coming up in July:

1)  Bee Day –  In association with The Duhallow Beekeepers Group   Come along to find out all you need to know about keeping bees. Practical demonstrations, advice and a chance to quiz the experts on all things Bee!

Local honey for sale.   Specials served in the Troom, including Cream Tea.

“if the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” Albert Einstein

Sunday 4th July 2 – 5pm (entry free)

2) Poultry Keeping for Beginners (or The Hen Party as we like to call it!)

Sunday 11th July  2010 1 – 5pm.

No entry charge

Margaret McGuire from The Mobile Pet Shop will be doing a talk at various intervals throughout the day on everything you have always wanted to know about keeping poultry but were too chicken to ask!

Feeders, drinkers, Verm-X dewormer, mite powder, GM Free feed  and hens will be available to purchase or order on the day. We are hoping to have ducks for sale on the day also.

As always, specials will be served in the T Room, including cream tea, so this offers a lovely afternoon out for the family!

3)  Summer Vegetable Garden with Dromcollogher Organic College.  Saturday 17th July 10 – 1pm. A three hour workshop with Sinead Nealand from Dromcollogher Organic College offering practical advice and demonstration of seasonal jobs in the vegetable garden including harvesting, feeding, pest & diseases,  as well as seeds to be sowing now for late summer and winter crops. The class will be strictly limited in numbers so booking with a deposit is essential. The class will take place outside and costs €20 per head including tea & biscuits. For those of you that have done courses with Sinead before, you’ll know how interesting and informative they are.
