LATE LAST year, Ranger Brendan O’Mahony from Millstreet, Co Cork had work as a carpenter on the few building sites still operating in west Cork. Next month, he will be in Nad-e-Ali in Afghanistan facing the Taliban.
Twenty-four-year-old O’Mahony, who signed up last November, is just one of 80-odd men born in the Republic and hundreds more from Northern Ireland who are now serving with the British army’s Royal Irish Regiment.
“The fall of the Celtic Tiger didn’t affect me. I was still working. That wasn’t why I joined. It was something I always wanted to do. My father did 22 years in the Irish Army. I thought the British army would be more of a challenge,” O’Mahony says.
“It’s challenging,” says O’Mahony. “My younger brother is jealous and my sister thinks it’s a bit mental.”

The above is an extract from an article in today’s Irish Times

Drishane Drama Camp Concert was held on Friday, 30th July 2010.   For the past two weeks a wonderful combination of international and local young people took part in the splendidly creative project.    The Concert presented a most enjoyable mixture of song, dance and drama.  There will be a full report with lots of pictures in next week’s “Corkman”.   Great credit is due to all who helped to co-ordinate the magnificent presentation.  Here we share the first of a number of images from this uplifting event at Drishane, Milllstreet.  (Seán)

12th Old Time Threshing and Vintage Afternoon Sunday July 25th. 2010

For any outdoor event the weather makes all the difference, and this year the sun blazed down in Cullen for the hosting of the 12th Old Time Threshing and Vintage Afternoon, we were blessed with brilliant summer sunshine that lifted the spirits of all who attended “the Threshing” as well as honouring our own patron Saint – Laitiarain. Incidentally it was also Macra’s “Know your neighbour Weekend”.

The vintage enthuastics arrived early on the day, many having travelled long distances to display their rare items, which ranged continue reading…

Renowned Cork footballer, Donncha O’Connor was at Millstreet Town Park this evening (29th July) to conduct a very comprehensive training session with Millstreet GAA Juvenile Club members – the Under-14s and the Under-16s.   We were also introduced to the new addition to the local Juvenile Kit – the “Under Armour Skin” – clothing which keeps sportspeople cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.   Many thanks to Michael for alerting us to this Town Park happening.  (Seán)

A very successful Vintage and Threshing Event organised by Cullen & District Special Needs Association was held in Cullen on Sunday, 25th July to coincide with the Feast of St. Laitiaran.   One of the biggest attendances in recent years – and the number of participants also increased.  We recorded for our website and for LTV2.  We share just one of many pictures (more to follow in coming days) from this annual most enjoyable happening. Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1023 from Millstreet.

Fondest greeting dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely balmy Tuesday morning.

This weekend we welcomed our new Parish Priest Fr. John FitzGerald, he will have the daunting tack of presiding over the entire parish, with its three churches and a sprawling congregation. And as we welcome him in we assure him of our full support and co-operation. And may God bless his work.

And on the subject of people I want to say well done to the places who have started to hold ,”getting–to-know-the-neighbours” gatherings . In these days of doom ‘n gloom and uncertainty there is nothing more encouraging than to know the name of all those around you and be on friendly a familiar terms with them, I hope the idea grow and flourish in many other places.

I have just discovered that my great grand aunt and uncle (brother and sister) were baptised in Millstreet. Their names were Daniel and Catherine Spillane, their father Paul Spillane and their mother Catherine Driscoll. Their sponsors (god parents) were Michael Spillane, Ellen Driscoll, Tim Mccarthy and Ellen Spillane. Clonakilty is the recorded parochial area. I should love to know more about the family and hope someone will recognise the names. The family came over to England around 1841/2. Daniel became a Catholic priest and died in 1896 visiting family in New York.!
As far as I know Catherine never married and her parents died in England. I hope you can help, or point me in the right direction for further research”. Best wishes, Christine.

Freemount 3-9 Millstreet 1-11

Millstreet crashed out of the Duhallow Junior Hurling Championship tonight after as Freemount came from behind in the second half to battle into the next round.

The game started well for Millstreet with two unanswered points in the first five minutes, but they were quickly wiped out when a long ball into the Millstreet square saw the defenders and goalie hesitate for a second as the Freemount forward raced in and stuck away a simple goal. continue reading…

Sr. Christina with the Presentation Convent School in the Background

Sr. Christina O’Sullivan was born in Brosna Co.Kerry eighty two years ago. She entered the Presentation Congregation in the Noritiate, Oakpark Tralee. After her Profession, she was assigned to Millstreet Community until her death on 7th May 2005. She belonged a family of fourteen and had a sister (Sr.James) who predeceased her in Presentation Convent Killarney.

Sr. Christina was a woman of great faith, courage and was deeply spiritual. Her special devotion was the Rosary and she visited Tubrid Well almost daily. She loved people, and the people of Millstreet and surrounding areas loved her in return, which was shown by the crowds young and old who were present at her removal and funeral mass. continue reading…
