The Big Concert this week will be in our parish Church on Sunday November 29^th in aid of the Church restoration Fund.entitled “Sounds of Advent.” Our own Parish choir will open the two hour show, and they will be followed by the  Kerry Choral Society.

Tickets @ €20 each can be bought over a wide area or from the parish office ,or at the door on the night. Please support it well. Starts at 7.30 ,bring a cushion as the Church seats are hard.

Little baby Jacob has gone through the first operation for his condition anophthalmos and his mother Wiola has written about it on his website:

A few days ago Jacob had his first operation in Germany. It was an emotional experience for us. We were very worried when they were taking him into the operating theatre. I was thinking: he is still so little, how will he take a general anaesthetic?
During the operation, Jacob got his first expanders, which from now on will be stimulating orbital growth. Thanks to a few operations like this one Jacob will be able to receive his ocular prostheses.
When after the operation we were called into the recovery room, I found myself looking at the huge IV catheter inserted into his tiny hand. I was wondering why it is so in this world that children are born sick and …

A fearless fellow in his younger years
His passing would have been a source for tears.

And memories of him remain evergreen

As a person for his integrity respect to him was shown

A quick note from Hilary that there is a Christmas Bazaar on in the Dromtarriffe Community Centre on Sunday 29th November from 2pm. This year the proceeds are between Derinagree, Rathcoole and Dromagh National Schools.

The Department of Education and Science have published an inspection report on Cloghoula National School. We have added the conclusion below, but the whole report is available to read on the Department’s website. The Wedding Journal Show is back in the Green Glens in the New Year on the 23rd and 24th of January in the Green Glens Arena. Last year was a very successful event, as is described on their website

It may have been icy outside but the Wedding Journal team’s hearts were warmed by the impressive turnout to the Cork Show. Arriving at Millstreet on January 24th, the two-day show was our biggest Cork event to date, with even more exhibitors and visitors than ever before.

Those in search of a New Year bargain weren’t disappointed either, as exhibitors, from photographers, to florists, make-up artists and bridal stores, offered exclusive rates and opportunities to enter competitions throughout weekend event.

Heavy rain fell across the country the past few days which caused flooding in most areas.

Laurence Graham, the Methodist Minister for Millstreet has dropped us a note that RTE Radio 1 will be broadcasting from their Church in Kenmare tomorrow (Sunday) morning:

… the Broadcast Service on RTE Radio 1 this Sunday (22nd) is coming from the Methodist Church in Kenmare.  It is on from 10.45 – 11.30 a. m. but only on Long Wave and Internet.  It’s not on FM.  That would give people an opportunity to hear something of how we worship etc.

RTE 1 Broadcasts on long wave at the 252 frequency.
The service should be available to listen to afterwards on the RTE Religious Listen back Archive for 2009.

The death has occurred on Friday, November 20, 2009 of Tom KELLEHER of Mologhroe, Cullen, Mallow, Cork. Removal this Saturday evening at 8pm from Tarrant’s Funeral Home, Millstreet to the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cullen. Requiem Mass tomorrow, Sunday, at 10.30am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Family flowers only, donations to the Irish Cancer Society.

Coursing Clubs together’ night at The Kingdom
The eight coursing clubs in Co Kerry, together with their near neighbours Glin, Abbeyfeale and Millstreet, are coming together for what should be a really enjoyable ‘All Sponsored’ race night at The Kingdom Stadium in Tralee on Saturday 28th November.

In an economic downturn it is especially important to promote business, industry and shopping in any town or area. Millstreet Development Group has been established with this in mind. Millstreet has always been a traditional market town offering a wide range of goods and services. This is still very much the case. The Group has been established by a number of businesses from the Millstreet area to promote the town.

With Christmas fast approaching, the group has taken out double page advertising features in local papers to remind people just what the town has to offer. It has also set up a scheme which will allow people to buy gift vouchers at the Credit Union that can then be redeemed in any one of over twenty five shops and businesses. They have organised a number of exciting initiatives for Christmas Week which include Carol Singing, Christmas music and lights, and a Marquee in the Square to sell a range of food and crafts. All this is designed to help keep money in the town.

Once Christmas is out of the way, the group hopes to focus on a number of broader issues affecting the town. A major issue at present is the lack of an industrial zone in the area to allow new light industrial businesses to open or allow existing businesses to expand. Also, the group feels that tourism should be promoted and encouraged. The area is one of outstanding natural beauty with a great facility in The Millstreet Country Park. Any increase in tourism would surely benefit everyone in the town.

Millstreet Development Group has plenty of work to do, but with the enthusiasm and hard work of its members and support from the wider community it should prove to be a big benefit for the town.

Cork County Council hopes to dispose of 42 houses, deemed affordable, in towns and villages in North Cork, as it has been unable to find buyers for them…

The houses are in Bweeng (10), Castlelyons (2), Charleville (2), Glanworth (6), Kanturk (6), Kilworth (1), Mallow (1), Millstreet (3) and Rathcormac (11)…

A senior executive officer with the council, said the local authority couldn’t continue to carry the costs associated with the empty houses. He told councillors the council had decided to sell off the houses in areas deemed to be in less demand for affordable housing…

Last year the Council dropped the prices of affordable housing when they realised that the market price was then below the price of their affordable housing. But still they have failed to sell them. Now they want to sell them at any cost, just to get the expense off their balance sheets.
