Youghal defeat Millstreet U16s in County Championship

YOUGHAL withstood a determined finish from Millstreet in a keenly contested County U-16 ‘B’ Football Championship semi final played at a rainlashed Mourneabbey last Monday.Weather conditions were anything but suitable for the game and great credit must go to both set of players for serving up a high standard of play given the wretched rain that prevailed in the opening half. At the end of the hour, there could be no argument about the outcome, Youghal were far, the hungrier side, their application superb and in general, the East Cork boys emerged much more enterprising in the prevailing conditions.

Scores were difficult to come by in the opening quarter as the rain sheeted down over the proceedings. However the value of sheer graft and endeavour were highlighted by a Youghal side boosted by the input generated of Andrew Curtin, David Twomey, Aaron Daly and Ryan Lane.

Points to Aaron O’Connor, Ross Desmond and Jack Cahill confirmed Youghal’s intentions whereas Millstreet squandered numerous chances to trail 0-5 to 0-1 at the break. Thankfully, the rain halted for the second spell as Youghal added to their tally from points to Desmond and David O’Mahony.

Millstreet proceeded to throw caution to the wind and mounted a comeback from the efforts of the Sheehans, Kevin Crowley and Len Murphy. Points to Crowley and John O’Mahony brought Millstreet right back into contention.

Indeed the Youghal defence lived dangerously at times as the ball held up in a waterlogged goalmouth. Still, Youghal repelled everything that was thrown at them and at the full time whistle, their three point win was justified to set up a place in the decider against Carbery Rangers.

Game was played on Monday 9 November 2009. Match report above from the Corkman on Nov 12th
